  1. what will yield higher quality from divx? vcd or svcd?

  2. really depends on the source file. As a rule of thumb, you want to encode down from the source file.

  3. What do you mean by encode down? If you are talking about resolution, the resolution is 640x272. What would you suggest. It is a very high quality divx

  4. what about bit rate? With the resolution in the divx, VCd(352x240 would give you the best results).

If you have a good looking DivX then go for svcd. svcd(using a VBR method) will look better than a standard vcd(non-standard is debatable but lets not get into that) as long as your source is pretty good and you don't use an average bitrate or quality setting that's too low.

  6. Not sure about bit rate, how do you find it for a divx file

  7. Some divx can be excellent quality, if this is the case encoding to SVCD will give a better result. I have encoded some good divx files to DVD with a bitrate of 5mb/s and they look excellent.

Right click on the file, click properties, them summary. The bitrate should be displayed. Remember that this is shown in kilobytes/sec and not kilobits/sec. To convert from a byte to a bit multiply by 8

Resolutions like 640x272 are usually excellent quality and are usually DVD-Rips. I would recommend converting to SVCD.

  10. 104KB/s x 8= 832Kb/s sounds kind of low, but it looks great. It is not a DVD rip but a laserdisc capture.

  11. That may seem low compared to VCD or SVCD, but is not low for divx. Remember that divx uses better compression techniques than mpeg, so a much lower bitrate can give excellent looking video.

  12. So would you suggest svcd or vcd with this bitrate and resolution?

I would suggest encoding to SVCD since you said in one of your earlier posts that your laserdisc capture was very high quality.
