I've ripped a DVD that was widescreen using SmartRipper. I framed served it with DVD2AVI. When it was ripped, SmartRipper said Aspect 16 X 9, type: Pan Scan. DVD2AVI said 16 X 9, but the type was NTSC and Film. When I used TMPGEnc in encode, I got a letterbox version, inside the normal 16 X 9 Letter Box. Above and below the picture were about a 1 inch grey bars, giving the appearence I stated above. I tried using in TMPGEnc the following mcf's ... 4 X 3 Fullscreen, 4 X3 Keep Aspect Ration, in both the Video CD NTSC and Video CD Film. I then did the same thing with 16 X 9. All tries resulted in the gray bars. The only thing I haven't tried (unless there are more suggestions out there) is on the advanced tab of TMPGEnc, changing the grayed out setting. When I clicked on the aspect ratio (standard 4 X 3), TMPGEnc gave me all kinds of warnings about how they are not responsible for what may happen.

Thanks in advance to anybody that can assist, even if it a great template out there that would work on Wide Screen Formats.

Found the solution. Finally got another 16X9 movie to do the grey bars again. This time, I used the last option (under the advanced tab) of environmental settings. It is No Margins (Keep Aspect Ratio). This did away with the gray bars. Hope this helps others out

make sure you don't put the output as 16:9.

  4. These greybars as you put it are there because the dvd you are encoding is 2.35:1 and possibly anamorphic. I'm not sure there is a a way of encoding a dvd to be anamorphic 2.35:1 in tmpgenc, although I hope someone proves me wrong, because alot of mine are getting this grey bar as a result.
