I got a firewire for my digital 8 camera and installed the necessary components. Then, when I plugged the end of the firewire cord into my camera and turned it on, I was prompted with a message saying new hardware detected. The problem is I don't know what drivers I need to use because it keeps asking me and I don't know what to do. Apparently there are none on the cd supplied with the firewire and I don't believe my camera came with a cd.
Help is appreciated.

I am using Windows 98 on a Gateway 2000 machine. I'm also using a Sony Digital 8 camera if that helps any.
-
Right clic on My Computer, properties, hardware, device manager, and check and see if there is a IEEE 1394 bus host controller. If you dont have this and you see a ! mark, windows 98 cant find the hardware that you installed. You will have to have the make and model number of the firewire card that you installed, and go to there web site and get the driver.
Good luck!! -
I just did as you said but the software and card appear to be installed correctly.

install this first
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows98/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUFeatured/1394/Default.asp
then if still a problem check this -

Thanks for the help but I tried both of those links and neither worked. I think I've possibly found the problem so maybe you can help and see if I'm interperating this properly. In the manual, it says the following:
This unit can also be connected to other i.LINK(DV) compatible equipment made by SONY other than video equipment.
Does this mean I have to have a SONY computer to do this or what? -
But it says it can be connected to other equipment MADE BY SONY. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the way I'm interperating this is that in order for the firewire and such to work, you have to use sony equipment to do it, such as a computer made by SONY. Maybe I'm dead wrong but I thought that could be the problem possible.
-
nope - sony equipment not required , though sony would like you to believe that ..

I just chatted with Gateway and they said that I need to install the USB drivers for my camera. Does anyone know where I could get them from? My camera is a Sony Digital8 DCR-TRV130.
Thank you. -

Wish I could tell you what is wrong but it seems that BJ_M has given you good answers. I think the Gateway person is off base. I don't believe the IEEE1397 has anything to do with the USB.
I have installed generic firewire cards in both Gateway and Dell computers under Windows98, Windows ME, and Windows 2000. In each case no separate driver was required. Is the card OHCI compliant?
I also use a Sony camera similar to the one you have. I would look at the Microsoft sites again, and perhaps try moving the card to another slot. -
I see what you are saying but I did search around on the internet and found that people are having the same problem, then getting the drivers and having the issue resolved. I also heard something about a cd SONY has with drivers on it.

Does the 6pin to 4pin firewire cable matter? Or does it have to be 4pin to 4pin? Right now, I'm using the 6 pin side for my CPU and the 4 pin to hook into my iLINK slot.

I just checked out my camera, labeled Other Device, in the device manager folder and examined it. It says the device, the camera I presume, is working fine, but they can't locate the drivers. I put in the Windows 98 cd and it didn't find any on there. I'm still convinced that I need some driver for a DCR-TRV130 but it's just a matter of locating it.

What about this ?
The Device Is Unsupported
These devices generally appear with an exclamation point in a yellow circle in Device Manager, or do not appear at all. If the device is a host controller card, you could try a comparable Windows driver. Because the IEEE 1394 driver stack is (for the most part) unchanged between Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows 2000, it should work. Note that when you do this, you may cripple any Plug and Play or Power Management features the computer may have. This occurs when you apply a legacy driver to Windows 2000. Some devices (storage and printing, for example) require additional drivers to function. Verify that you have those drivers available before installing the device.
Only OpenHCI (OHCI) host controllers are supported natively. This applies to Windows 2000 and Windows 98 Second Edition. Sony CXD1947A (Vaio), all Adaptec controllers, and any other non-OHCI controller require additional device drivers as supplied by the manufacturer to function. -
It would probably help readers here if you indicated your Firewire make and model. My firewire (Ads Pyro - OHCI compliant TI chip) did come with drivers and those drivers were necessary in order to make my Canopus compatible with it. The device can be 'installed and working properly' and still have drivers missing.
Did you check Sony website and contact their tech support? I have a sony digital camera and a techie I spoke to over the phone was very helpful in locating the proper drivers online when I lost my CD.
***Somewhere else on this site I recalled another user with your exact same problem (proprietary Sony software issues) - try searching this site for sony cameras and see if you find the same posting I refer to. Good luck
Gateway->Support->Sometimes Offbase -when I had a Gateway, a tech instructed me to remove my modem to resolve a communication conflict. Then realizing I needed updated win98 drivers to reinstall my modem, he said "no problem, just go to our website to download them" and I said, "yeah? with what modem??" Humbly, he mailed me a driver CD...It's not about getting what you want, it's wanting what you've got -
Sony TRV-18, generic firewire card (Lucent chipset). Drivers installed automatically under Win98se and Win2000. The easiest thing might be for you to try a different brand of card.
-
I bought the card at Circuit City for 50.00. It is made by Adaptec and called FireConnect 4300. It came with the card, a firewire cable, and software.
-
Here's some more information if it helps anyone:
I double clicked on System from the Control Panel. I then clicked on the Device Manager tab. The camera was listed under the Other Devices tab and then was called Unsupported Device. The Device Status says the device is working properly. I then clicked on the Driver tab and it says that no drivers are needed or have been loaded for this device and to update the drivers, click on Update Driver.
This is what leads me to believe I need some type of driver for the camera. -
It sounds like your firewire card is installed correctly, you just need the software to allow the video transfer which does not come with 98. I use Adobe Premier or Window Movie Maker from XP.
-
I just got off the phone with Sony and they said that I need Windows 98 Second Edition because my version doesn't support it. Is there a place where I can get second edition, like an update?
-
I don't know but if it is as an update you should be able to get it from windowsupdate.microsoft.com
-
the link i gave above IS the update for win 98 as you first stated you had - so back to square 1
-
But is that update going to update my Windows to 98 SE? Everytime I double-click on that .exe file, I get a message saying that "This update is not designed for your version of windows."
