  1. There has been much discussion on the various video cards, but not that much on the sound cards used in video capturing.

Are there any sound cards to stay away from?
Are there any that are exceptional?

  2. I can tell you one that has given me fits. The Sound Blaster Live! Value. I'm not completely sure it's the soundcard's fault. It could partly be the fault of my ATI AIW, but I get clicks and pops in every capture. And I even tried the tips from the forum regarding the PCI Latency and it didn't help. I'll be anxious to see what recommendations you get.

    Thanks,
    Will

  5. I had tons of problems with the Soundblaster card i.e. audio synch and dropped frames. The problems all went away when I replaced the card with a cheap Aureal Vortex.

I have been using SoundBlaster Live 1024 card and I had problems with it and Pinnacle Studio DC10+ card. My computer crashed and corrupted Win98 registry...several times and I installed the operating system at least 5 times.

That problem was due to the motherboard BIOS and VIA drivers. After updating them it works fine.

I'm capturing .AVI (see http://www.vcdhelp.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=49122&forum=2), but I had similar problems when trying to capture MPEG-1 or 2 (although it didn't seem quite as bad). Any and all help would be appreciated. I got an El Cheapo sound card to replace it, but in general, I don't like the sound as much (other than capturing, which is MUCH better than the Sound Blaster Live).

    WMike,
Aureal Vortex, you say, eh?? What chipset is that?? I also had my eye on a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz.

    Thanks,
    Will

  10. CompUSA has a Hi-Val card based on the Aureal A3D chip for $19.99 http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?prodzip=&product_code=280628
I wonder if it's any good. (Anyone have any experiences with it?)

    Thanks,

  11. I use a AMD 1.2 on a EPOX motherboard with a Sound blaster live 5.1, no probs here, use hampuagge PVR MPEG1 or 2 encoder card, capture SVCD... sound is great, capture in AVI Uncompressed\ligoos 5.11\BTYUV no probs either.
    Maybe I was just lucky!?!

  12. I wasn't saying the Sound Blaster Live is a bad card. Just that it has dealt me fits. Other than capturing video it is great. I don't even know that it's the sound card that's giving me the problems or the video card. It could be my mainboard, my modem, or the color of my wallpaper. hahahaa I'm hoping next will come through with some help.

    Thanks,
    Will

  13. I've had great luck using Turtle Beach Montego II for anything I've done. I've had it for a few years. With my limited video experience, I have yet to see any problems.
