  1. Hello!

I have some aspect ratio problems while converting a DVD2AVI project file (*.d2v) to MPEG-1 VCD format. My d2v source is in the widescreen format (16:9) and I want TMPGEnc to keep this aspect ratio. But the converter always create an other cinemascope so the movie only takes 1/3 of the screen. I've tried to put the source at 1:1 Vga and Fullscreen (keep aspect ratio) but TMPGEnc always do those irritating black lines... HELP ME!!!!

    thanks a lot

  2. It's been my experience that a 16x9 widescreen format is always going to have the black bars at top and bottom of the screen when played on a standard full screen TV. Just like the original DVD. Checking "keep aspect ratio" ensures this.
What resolution size(pixels)are you using? What format TV are you playing back on?

    I found this:
    1) In Order for TMPGEnc to recognise D2V files, you MUST have the VFAPI and the DVD2AVI.VFP file located where the TMPGEnc.EXE file is! it will NOT work any other way! It is also sometimes helps to use the Forced Film option in DVD2AVI, but only if you are still unable to open the D2V files with TMPGEnc. (suggsted by msfox)

  3. Well exactly, the two black lines aren't the problem.

My source (D2V) is in 4:3 (movie in 16:9 + black lines) so it already haves the black lines.

The only problem is the fact that TMPGEnc extends the black lines (It considers the D2V file as a 16:9 and adds new black lines). It creates some "double cinemascope" and the movie is almost unviewable.

Maybe this will be easier for everyone to understand what is my conversion problem

    Thanks again,

  4. Make sure under the video tab you have 4:3 checked in aspect ratio. In the advanced tab, check 4:3 for the source aspect. In video arrange, set to full screen(keep aspect ratio 2). I encode mine at 352x240 resolution.

  5. I think you only need to use the "1:1 VGA" setting for encoding a "*.avi" file.

Given that your film is already 4:3 and letterboxed (as opposed to widescreen), then under the "advanced" tab you just need to select "4:3 625 line" for PAL or "4:3 525 line" for NTSC. I think if you then select "full screen keep aspect ratio" you should be OK. If you use the "source range" (also under the advanced tab), you should be able to test a small portion before you do the whole encode.

  6. This is the reason why I will kill Bill Gates next time I see him...

The problem wasn't caused by TMPGEnc but by this $%#$%@#$ Media Player in Windows XP. When the file is in Media Player, the software creates additionnal black lines to put its playback controls. That's why the image seemed odd. Well, the only thing I could say is: Microsoft always makes things different...

I'd also like to say thanks for your support!
