A little bit more than an answer to your request. But you need to have installed the Canopus DV codec to be able to use AVI with TMPGEnc.

I use a Canopus ADVC-100 and software which came with the box to capture AVI (Canopus DV format). I just use TMPGEnc to convert right from this format to VCD, SVCD, CVD and DVD with no issues. Unless you are doing some major editing I wouldn't recommend Adobe as it's a little bit overkill. Equipment that I am using for just video/audio stuff is:
HP 1.8GHz, 512 Mb internal memory, 200 Gig HDs (120/80), generic 64 meg video card, Canopus DV Raptor Firewire card, HP CDRW burner, Pioneer 105 DVD burner and external Canopus ADVC-100 Analog to DV capture box. On this machine using Win98SE (but use XP on other machines). For captures use DTV Satellite source to Canopus ADVC-100 via svideo connection.
For VCDs- Captured AVI is converted to VCD using TMPGEnc then burned with Nero. (using external audio SCMPX & Lame for audio / frequency conversion)
For SVCDs - Captured AVI is converted to SVCD using TMPGEnc then burned with Nero. (using external audio SCMPX & Lame for audio / frequency conversion)
For DVDs - Captured AVI is converted to DVD using TMPGEnc splitting Video and Audio. Converting audio to AC3 using SoftEncode. For a plain capture with no chapters/multiple videos use InfoEdit to author DVD. For more complex video (Camera DV / multiple videos) use Spruce Up to author then Nero to burn. Always burn to a DVD RW to validate then finally to DVD-R to keep. These are to play on US purchased DVD players.
