  1. Hi there.

    1) I was wondering if someone could make chapters in a SVCD or VCD, just like they are in the DVD.

If yes, will I be able to play the SVCD \ VCD on a standalone DVD player or on my PC ?

    2) BTW, do the VCDs \ SVCDs support subtitles ? For example, can I rip a DVD with the Greek subtitles only, burn it on SVCD \ VCD and then be able to watch it on a standalone DVD player or my PC ?

    3) I can't quite understand "SVCD does also supports up to 4 removable subtitles but SVCD subs is only supported by a few standalone DVD Player and no software DVD Player or H+, DXR3, DXR2 supports it." Is that a problem if I intend to do what I said in (2) ?

Thx in advance for the replies.

Yes you can make chapters. Software that will do it include: VideoPack4, VCD Toolkit and VCDImager for VCDs, and I-Author and VCDImager for SVCDs. I have a soft spot (and highly recommend!! ) VCDImager but the other proggies are quite good too. VCD Toolkit has been released for free. VCDImager is open source freeware (and under constant development). The others are commercial.

Essentially all S/VCD compatibile DVD players and most software DVD/VCD programs support chapters on S/VCDs (in so much the "entrypoints" system of chapters).

VCDs do not support optional subtitles (e.g., like DVDs). SVCDs support up to 4 optional/user selectable subtitle streams. For both VCDs and SVCDs you can "hard encode" subtitles into the picture (i.e., the subtitles are part of the movie picture itself).

This refers to the user selectable subtitles. This isn't universably supported. If you want universal support, you should hard encode your subtitles -- but then you can't turn them off.

  3. 1) What's the difference between "menus" and "chapters in SVCD ?

    2) Say I have burned 2 X-Files episodes on a SVCD, how will I be able to move to the second episode without having to watch all the first ? Do I need to create a menu or a chapter ?

    3) Is there a way to create a SVCD with chapters and the ability to FFWD through the movie ?

    4) Last but not least, something about the Guides here. In the Author/Burn guides it says : "How to burn a mpeg2 to SVCD with Nero--- Easy but no many creation" and a few lines under that it says : "How to create a SVCD menu with Nero 5.5 "

What the heck ??? Can Nero create menus or not ?

    5) What's a GUI ?

    6) What's ther purpose of converting the mpeg file to a BIN/CUE before burning ? Is there a loss in quality ?

    7) Is there a guide on this site on how to create chapters for SVCD\VCD ?

Thx in advance for the answers.

Menus are exactly what they sound like... a screen with a still or animated background from which you can choose something (have a look at a DVD).

Chapters are exactly what they sound like too... pressing next or prev goes to the previous chapter. You can select a chapter from a menu, but this isn't prerequisite for "chapters" to work. Chapters should play from one to the next seamlessly.

Read the above. The difference between chapter and menu is obvious. Think of a book analogy. A menu is the table of contents. A chapter is... well, a chapter. You could have a book with no table of contents but chapters. You could have a book with a table of contents but no chapters. Or you could have both... or none.

If you are creating a simple two episode thing, you can just create two tracks on the VCD. Having a menu is completely optional. Chapters is probably inappropriate unless you want to skip to bits within an episode.

Yes, you can create both VCDs and SVCDs with "chapters". You can FFWD though S/VCDs as well. I feel, however, that you're not sure about your own terminology though.

You can use Nero to create SVCDs without menus, thus the first line. You can also use Nero to create SVCDs with menus as well (not very good menus though) thus the second line. It's really not that confusing.

VCDImager obviously needs to create a disc image for you to burn before you can make your physical VCD. VCDImager isn't a burning program, just an authoring one. There is no loss of quality.

    Search the forums.

Before asking any more questions, read the product documentation and search the forum first. These questions have been answered many times before.

  5. Well, I didn't want to become a pain in the a**. This questions may have been answered before but that doesn't justify your "hostile" and impolite manner.

Anyway, sorry again and thank you for the answers.

  6. I apologise if I sounded impolite.

Most of these questions are better answered if look at other sources like the documentation to various programs, as well as the guides on this site -- and previous posts.

Authoring the more complicated aspects of VCDs isn't that simple and you won't be able to get a comprehensive picture from a few simple posts.

    Good luck.

Hostile? Are you serious? At least you said thanks for the answers. Give me a break.

No problem, man. No offence taken.

    @NEXT
Nobody asked for a third person's opinion. The misunderstanding was between me and vitualis and we had it settled in a very mild way..There's no reason in taking this thing any further. No reason to start flaming in this board...

Give your advice where it is wanted.

    Thx

Last time I checked this was an open forum. And stop being so 'hostile and impolite' . Ok?
