Due to my woes with VirtualVCR I've been experimenting with VirtualDub for capturing and thanks to someones post here I no longer suffer from more drops then captures...HOWEVER....
I can not capture at 640x480 or any resolution above x480 only at x240. I get ab error 418: unsupported video format. Yet other progams allow for 640x480 captures. I noticed my captures at 640x240 (VirtualDub) are much more grainy looking then with VirtualVCR at 640x480.
I've also seemed to resolved my audio synch issues with VDub but they remain with VirtualVCR.
Any comments would be welcomed....
Cheers
Kenmo

see if your cap board supports the drivers at
http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/ - these drivers allow hires caps with supported boards - the limit will be the cpu speed/throughput.Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin' -
Twice in the past I've tried to install the BTWin drivers and each time they messed up my system resulting in me having to re-install Windows 2000.
I'll give 'em a try again BUT I am a little hestitant.
Thanks for the info.
Cheers

Triple check your card is listed and select WDM drivers if they exist as VfW drivers are old and not supported by W2K. If they don't work, you might decide to buy a new cap card.

Kitty,
Thanks for the reply . I have a newer ATI TV Wonder pci card that is listed as being supported. And yes my os is Windows2000 with Sp3. I use WDM drivers and the vfwwrapper for VirtualDub.
Thanks

I wouldn't suggest using those drivers as an alternate. MY VDUB gives the same error with my AverTV Studio. Doesn't make sense because on the box it states I can do up to 720X480 MPEG2.
(correct me if I'm wrong but higher resolution means better video quality?)
I tried the drivers, and VDUB hangs. Once you play around, vdub appears hung but continues to compress video anyway. Playback? The sound is out of sync. (even when locked)
I tried using the little utility btspy to ascertain my settings. Still no go.
Are there any other easy to use programs like VDUB out there that will allow me to do 640X480, or 720X480? From previous posts, this error seems to only happen in VDUB. I took a look at Virtual VCR, but it looks like it's to grab tv stuff. Can't choose a source in it..
Thanks! -
I set the video to preview mode (instead of overlay) and VDUB no longer hangs. Voice is in sync now too.
Only problem left is crappy sound. The website for the driver mentions that it doesn't support the sound portion of the 878. It says it doesn't matter because most cards digitize sound through the sound card. (mine is an Audigy Gamer) I have a feeling my Studio does the sound through the 878 though, so I guess I am out of luck with this driver.
Any suggestions? Or other software I might be able to use for 640X480 or higher?

My capture card is an ATI TV Wonder pci and this is the third time installing these drivers has given me grief. My computer will balck screen and then reboot during the install.
I'll try the manual by hand install next but I've tried this twice before and had to rebuild my computer. To say the least I'm nOT impressed with these drivers. -
These drivers totally messed up my system. Yes I can capture at 640x480 vhs vcr tape but the colors are all wrong, with a strong blueish tint.
Also watching the vhs tape being watched has a weird flutter to it. Something I did not have with the original ATi drivers.
It looks like I have to re-install the original ATi drivers. -
These "better" drivers have made a totally stable computer, very unstable. I can not even boot up now to remove these drivers. Anyone suggesting these drivers is not HELPING anyone.
-
I agree Kenmo. I've just gone on a wild roller coaster ride with those drivers. I'm no newbie when it comes to tech support either.
Those drivers first killed my sound. I found a weird device under device manager which I removed and it killed my system. When I rebooted the mystery device found itself as an Audigy so there was my sound.
BUT THEN, because I was in device manager, it no longer worked. Search would no longer work, and other parts as well. So I did a repair of XP which screwed up because I made the mistake of updating the BIOS in the middle of the upgrade. Lesson learned, don't try to boot windows at 333 CAS2 if it was set to 266 CAS2. hehehe
Oh well, now I have to reinstall SP1, update all my drivers again blah blah...I'm going to use AVI IO I think.

And now it will never recover. It will take me more time to solve the problems, rather than reinstall.
EVIL DRIVERS - so much work ahead of me now. -
zuberal2, I could not agree more with you. I do network & pc hardware support for a living for over 15 years. These drivers have wrecked my system three times. At the website they do claim to work with ATi TV Wonder (pci version). They wrecked it when it was running :
1) Windows98SE with a K62-400 cpu and Epox mobo Nvida 128 video card
2) ungraded system to WinXp Pro and Duron 750 , MSI 6330 mobo TNT2 video card
3) downgraded os to Win2K 2000/Sp3 and upgraded to Athlon XP1800+, MSI K7T Turbo2 mobo Voodoo 3000 video card
The website says these drivers supported my ATi TV Wonder card PCI and resulted in much grief. For a few brief seconds I was able to capture 640x480 with VDub with the tweaked drivers but the picture was a mess and YES I was using NSTC (I live in Canada). Then the computer rebooted itself and was very unstable.
I re-installed everything (thanks to Norton's Ghost) and re-installed the ATi drivers and VDub works flawlessy BUT can not do 640x480. I've had great success with VirtualVCR. I've captured from tuner card and attached VCR as VirtualVCR with my card does allow me to select the source (composite, S-VHS or tuner). I've been capturing 1 hour stuff from vhs at 480x480, Huffyuv compression and audio remains in synch for an hour. I also checked Resample Audio & Resample audio dynamicly. Preview set to "off"
VirtualVCR has restored my interest in this hobby and between constant computer upgrades (I have three computers at home) and the constant upgrading of my 1960 Corvette (owned since 1983) my pocket book gets a little thin at times.
I agree these drivers are EVIL....if they work for you great....and if not "welcome to HARDWARE HELL". I would NOT recommend these drivers to my worst enemy. -
Has anyone had any luck installing these drivers with an ATi Tv wonder (pci version NOT isa).
-
A good suggestion BUT I could never get Huffyuv compression to work with it. I was trying MGI Videowave 3.5 & 5.0.
-
Strange, I use that compression because it works great. My capture settings are RGB24 and for the compression I use Predict Left (with my P2 @ 400Mhz).
-
If you have frame drops than this can help in MGI video wave:
Do NOT synchronize your audio to video or vice versa, but capture without synchro.
If your video source is an analog video tape such as VHS than the result sound can be out of sync. but don't worry. To correct the sync open your AVI with VirtualDub and go to the end of the movie to find some frames where you visual can allign audio with video easy (eg. someone how is talking). Open in VirtualDub the video menu and select frame rate, here you select "change to ... frames per second" and increse the value until your audio is synchronized. After than you can frame serve to TMPEnc or compress to another AVI format. Thats the way I do.
I have a PC with P2/400Mhz-256Mbr and a seagate 80GB at 7200rpm and with that I capture with MGI video wave v2.0 without any framedrop in Windows2000.

zuberal2,
I've got the AverMedia TV Sudio card too. I have not been able to capture at a resolution over 320x240 either with VDub. I use the Aver software and PowerVCR III to capture at higher resoultions. You will have to capture to Mpeg I or Mpeg II, but you will be able to capture at maximum resolution with these programs.

Has anyone got to capture at higher resolutions using the normal drivers with other programs besides VDub? Like AVI_IO?
