VCD WON'T PLAY!!

Somebody please help me out here. I have a Magnavox Dvd Player that I use to watch my Vcd's. I have made several vcd's and they all work. I use Memorex Cd-r's. I convert .avi movies to .mpg when I download them from KaZaA. Then I started downloading Xvid avi's and messed with settings on TmpgEnc so the Xvid movie would convert correctly. I then used TDK cd-r's and converted a regular avi to mpeg. When I burned the mpeg file onto a blank cd-r and played it on my computer, it worked. But when I tried watching it on my Dvd Player, it didnt work. So I bought a new pack of Memorex Cd-r's and the same thing happened. What's wrong?!

Are you just sticking the mpeg on a cd-r? Use nero to make a vcd, not a data cd with the mpeg lying in the middle of the cd .

I use Nero to burn the Mpeg. But I use TmpgEnc to split the mpeg file before burning.

Is it because maybe settings in TmpgEnc aren't correct? Or am I doing something wrong?

yes u should use nero to burn it, but burn it as a vcd (vcd is an option, right before SVCD). stick the mpeg in there and then hit burn when its ready. it will burn it as a standard compliant vcd.

I have done that in the past and it works. But there must be something wrong in the conversion process that maybe messes with the final Mpeg movie? What should my settings be in TmpgEnc?

how long have you had your dvd player? if its really old it might be going bad...plus ive heard that magnavox isnt scoring high in the integrity area for dvd players...you could also try looking at the framerate. I know that nero only lets me burn vcds and svcds at 29.97 fps, but TMPGEnc can encode at anywhere from 23 to 30, the most common 23.976 fps (or something like that). check that out, and if the dvd player is real old (id say like maybe 4-5 years) you might want to take it to a repair shop or somethin...make sure you can play real dvds fine...if they dont play well, then take it to a repair shop for a checkup.

Yeah my Dvd player is fine. I've had it for maybe 1 year. It plays Dvd's fine. It still plays the Vcd's I've made previously, but the ones I make now are not playing. I usually convert my mpegs at 352x240 and at 23.976 or 29.97. I have my audio at 44100 HZ. But do my envirionmental settings have to be at a certain setting maybe???

Hmmmm....im not sure about the environmental settings. make sure you encode movies the same way each time and use nero to make the vcd cuz i know ez cd creator didnt work for me. sorry i couldnt help any more.

oh yea, an idea just popped into my head, are u using different format discs now then you were before? like maybe you are using cd-rw now, and you were using cd-r discs before, or vice versa? i know my dvd player doesnt play cd-rw discs sometimes...it might also be that you are making a vcd 1.0 instead of vcd 2.0...use VCDEasy, search for it on www.google.com

I always use Cd-R. im pretty sure it is under 2.0 but i'll check to make sure. Thanks

The DVD player I use only specifies VCD as a NTSC format. I have some AVI. movies that were created under the PAL format. I couldn't get the PAL VCD to play on my DVD player. Can I convert the PAL format to a NTSC format to watch the movies?

Chuck, are you putting a PAL format AVI onto a cd and burning it? if its not mpeg and not burnt as a vcd/svcd it wont play.

Now if you already know that, yes you can convert PAL to NTSC. Use TMPGEnc (www.tmpgenc.net). Just go through the project wizard and select NTSC or NTSC Film under VCD, or NTSC or NTSC Film under SVCD. Then you can just click next and go through the project wizard and when its all done, it will start encoding the PAL format movie to either a NTSC/NTSC Film vcd/svcd.

I did use tmpge to convert the PAl format to NTSC but the CD didn't work in the Minntek DVD player. It spelled out "No Disc". I couldn't see any of the video under File/Preview when I was in Tmpge either.

I could watch the video when it was in AVI. format using the Windows media software. I have a new Gateway XP computer but I'm wondering if I am missing some other piece to put it all together.
