  1. I'm new to this forum and have a question. In my past experience converting AVI to MPEG for VCDs will yield a smaller file size. For the past few days I have been trying to convert a .AVI movie (about 116mb) to MPEG-1 using TMPGEnc v12i and the result is a .MPG file that's about 4x larger (465mb). I get about the same 4x results with .AVI to MPEG-2 for SVCD. I have followed the TMPGEnc Conversion guide at the left and the only thing I can think of is I may be loading the wrong settings (I'm using the provided .mcf templates for VCD and SVCD) or I might have an advanced setting incorrect. Anyone have a hint/clue how to get the file sizes smaller or am I just misunderstood here?

  2. If your AVI movie is only 116MB, it is probably a Divx, and a highly compressed one at that. It is quite possible that Divx compressed video can be smaller than VCD or SVCD standard video.

The filesize depends how long the video is, VCD is 10 MB/min and SVCD about 10-20 MB/min.

To be able to fit more min/MB you need to checkout other XVCD,SXVCD - check for example sefys or chizzzen tmpgenc templates.

  4. I suppose it's possible I have DivX files but how do you tell exactly? When I downloaded the large video file, the description was 320x240 AVI. Is there something in TMPGEnc or other app that will verify the file type? Any help is appreciated.

  5. Open the file in VirtualDub, select "File | File Information..." from the menu. In this dialog, there will be a field named "Decompressor" which will tell you the codec used to create the AVI. If it's Divx, it may actually be smaller in size than it will be when converted to VCD or SVCD. Like Baldrick said, if you then want to keep the filesize small, you will have to play around with non-standard formats (XVCD/XSVCD).
