  1. ok no matter what termplate, or what setting i use i always end up with an encode that starts out at 39:29:49 and then drops to about 11 hours, then goes back up slowly from there. im using 12a and 12e both do the same. i got an athalon 1gig machine with 256megs of pc150 RAM. it takes less time on my celeron 400........anyone know why the program is glitching up like this, and whats the best version of this program?

  2. Well the best is hard to say. Normally people say the original program 12beta (no letter) or h are the best, but only for MPEG2. For MPEG1 there doesn't seem to be any difference.

First, do you have DMA enabled, what other programs are running in the background? Are you encoding CBR or VBR, on a CBR encode once the time stabilies (say 2-3min) it should stay the same. When's the last time your defragged your HD? etc. etc. Just throwing out some ideas.

    What's the movie lenght?

I have had similar problems. It takes my computer about 1 to 2 hours for every minute I encode on my Dell 750MHz with 125MB ram. I usually leave the motion search to highest quality & I assumed this was the reason. However, I recently wanted to encode a movie where speed was more important to me than quality so I tried setting motion search to lowest quality & then motion estimate. However the encoding times only dropped slighlty (still 1 to 2 hours for 1 min of SVCD or 1 to 2 hours for ~5min of VCD).

I still use TMPEG when quality is very important to me but it would be nice to know why myself & others are using machines in the 1-2GHz ballpark and gettin 10+ hour encoding times.

maybe it has something to do with the Processor system. by this i mean MMX, MMX2, 3DNOW, SSE, SSE2.

Maybe yours is running something TMPG isn't optimized for.

I believe it is currently set for MMX, MMX2, SSE, SSE2,

    Can someone comment on 3DNOW

  6. i havn't had a problem with the time status that often

but has anyone else here had problems when it decodes ASF
files? if i continue at the rate i've been going at for the
last 2 days, then it will be done in another 10 days.
    the file is under 200megs
    i have a 700mhz with 256mb ram
and decoding avi, with or without divx, works fine in a
    matter of hours.

  7. To the message above... IMy computer is a little faster but I convert asf to mpg (vcd) in about 5 hours.. i usually am d/ling at that time so that slows it a little. I rip the wav from the asf with virtual dub 13c - this version works with asf format. Ripping the wav usually takes about a minute.

Getting back to this post... I use to have very slow converting time also.. i currently use a dell p4 1.4gig wit 128mb dram think pc800... I use to use version 12f and only converted .avi to mpg vcd and it would take about 10hrs to convert a 300mb avi to a 600mb mpg. slow.. I upgraded to I and now for some oddddddd reason i am doing that size file in less than 2 hours.. No questions asked by me.. I'm geeked
