I'm going to encode a svcd from a very wobbly vhs capture. the camera girl couldn't control the cam.

what effect would adding two or three extra I-frams have.

or perhaps adding more of the other frames.

i don't have the time for 2 pass encoding.

  2. The I-frames are full description frames (very similar to JPEGs). Adding extra I-frames will not help with camera jitter very much, as MPEG's motion compensation techniques should be able to do a competent job of that for you. The more I-frames you add, the larger your MPEG will be.

B and P frames describe the image relative to frames preceding and following them. The more you add, the more your image will degrade, but you will obtain greater compression.

Using a higher motion compensation setting in your encoder is your best bet.

But if i wanted to increase the clarity of the picture, would adding more I-frames help.

what about messing with the Quantiz Matrix. TMPG needs a help file.

  4. Yes, adding more I-frames will improve the quality of the picture at the expense of creating a larger file.

It's probably best if you leave the Quantize Matrices alone. These affect some very technical internal aspects of how the MPEG is encoded. Using the either the default or the MPEG standard setting provided by TMPGEnc is best.

the size of the file increased by 2megs. very managable.

    maybe i'll do

    640x480, pure I-Frames.
