  1. I am looking for a tuner that can do hardware mpeg 2 encoding, and considering the prices of quality tuners in the range, and of semipro hardware mpeg2 encoders I would like it if it could also pick up HDTV signals as well. I am willing to spend around $400. Have looked at the vidac card but wont order from them directly and live in the US so my options are limited (I realize they don’t do HDTV but otherwise it is perfect), I also know for HDTV I will be limited to over the air stuff if I don’t want to use a digital box. If nothing is available I am heavily leaning towards the 9700 all in wonder as it has some hardware encoding and editing features, and the though of using rendermonkey to write my own is intriguing, plus after my terrible experience with Hauppauge (wintv pvr) I doubt I would go with the 250 especially since it cant record directly to AV (don’t do that often but want it as an option), thanks.

    System
Pr 2.23 at 2.53 (not a factor in the hauppauge failure, PCI bus is locked, and card didn’t work even without the overclock, plus MB temp is just 30C and cpu is 35C)
    Asus P4b533E
    512 corsaird ddr400
    Hauppauge wintv pvr (evil)
    Soundblaster live 5.1
    Gainward geforce 3
    Wd 120jb
    Ibm 75gxp 30gig (linux)

Here are 2 that I can think of. Check the specs to make sure they do what you want. I haven't used either one, but they are the only ones I've seen for sale so far.

  3. thanks for the suggestions but I am not too interested in buying from hauppauge again, also I dont think ether of those cards can do mpeg2 encoding of analog signals in hardware.

  4. I have though about the vmagic, but the fact that they dont have any distributers in the US has detered me. I ordered the 9700 AIW yesterday and I will post next week saying how it is working.

  5. Check out these two links to hdtv capture cards one also does analog... also you can add a iomagic card to either of these for about $25.

I have the AccessDTV and use it to pump out to my panasonic HDTV. It works well although not perfect as the data is encrypted. The MYHD is not encrypted and can be easily converted to Mpeg2 DVD or SVCD, or mpg4.

you can read more about these cards by searching the htpc forums at www.avsforum.com.

Those cards are the same as the wintv HD cards. At least going by the picture.
