  1. Recently I got a sanyo DVW-5000 (dvd player/VCR).

After hooking it up to the TV the first disk I could find was a VCD disk I had burned. When I put it in it spit it right back out.

This player apperently does not support VCD. However it will play a CD-R with an MP3 somewhere on it. So I know it can read CDRs

I have used TMPGenc to convert to MPEG 1/2 and NERO to burn it to an (S)VCD

After reading about authoring a VCD on a DVDR. I would like to know if it is possible to do the opposite and author a DVD on a CDR (not as VCD or SVCD) so that any DVD player could play it, considering it can read CDRs.

If not I soppose I could buy a DVDR or take back the Sanyo DVD player for another.

I you know anything about this let me know,

  2. You can create DVD video on CD-R's, but not all players play them. I have tried playing a disc I created on my LOGIX 3300d dvd player, it does not recognise the disk. However my friend has a HAUS dvd player and it works fine on his. The software I used to conver the video to dvd was Roxio Videopack, not sure if this made any difference.

I suppose you experiment with your player to see if it plays.

  3. Some DVD Player manufacturers provide firmware updates on their website to expand their players capabilities. You may want to visit the SANYO website for any updates to allow VCD playback.

This is called MiniDVD or cDVD. Compatibility in set-top players is poor. Usually, as soon as you load the disc the DVD player checks to see what it is. When it sees a CD, it doesn't even check for a DVD structure (that's also why burning MP3s to a DVD-R doesn't work on a lot of players, they see it's a DVD and look for the DVD structure). Most of the time you need firmware patches to get miniDVD support. You can't fit much on a CD anyway.
