After reading this forum I found out that I had to use VOB Instant CD/DVD or RecordNow MAX to be able to burn a DVD-R that would playback on my standalone DVD player - a Pioneer DV-454. (I had tried burning with Gear Professional DVD and Nero with no success).
I followed the "How to burn to DVD-Video with VOB Instant CD/DVD" guide and unchecked "the disc contains long filenames according to the Microsoft Joilet standard" (by default it is checked). The DVD-RW did not play on my DV-454. I tried again and used the default settings (long filenames checked) and now my DVD-RW plays perfect.
Why is long filenames unchecked in the vcdhelp.com guide? Obviously it needs to be checked for the DVD-R to play in a Pioneer DV-454, but is this just an issue with this player or should it always be checked for a DVD-R to be compilant with as many standalone DVD players as possible?
