  1. I am looking for a DVD player that is able to play NTSC DVD on a PAL TV.
I live in Perth, Western Australia, I do not have a multisystem TV. I only have budget for a DVD player but not a DVD player plus a multisystem TV. I get SIGGRAPH conference proceeding in DVD and they are produce in NTSC format.

I have asked around but most of the sales staff are not knowlegeable about NTSC playback on PAL TV. They keep recommending I buy a multi-system TV from them too! I am looking for a sub A$200-A$300 DVD player. One local retail chain, Harvey Norman, sells a Celestial DVD player for A$149.

If I need to verify that it does work, what specific information in a DVD manual will tell me if it is able to play back an NTSC DVD to a PAL TV. The sales staff are not willing to connect up a PAL-only TV as they are trying to push their multi-system TV.

I live in Perth, if anyone knows of a suitable player, could they point me to a local store too.

    Cheers

I am from Sydney. A Pioneer DVD player should be able to convert a NTSC DVD to PAL TV.

My Pioneer DVD player is multi-region as well as multi-system. My DVD playback is Auto - NTSC or PAL into my multi-system Sony TV.

In your case with a PAL TV, you should be able to set your player as PAL out only. NTSC DVD playback automatically is converted to PAL on the TV. Depending on the TV, I warn the picture may shrink vertically. Black bands on the top and bottom as a result due to the conversion.

A multi-system TV is much better.

Beware the retailers! Is Celestial DVD player multi-region and/or multi-system? Get what you want and be sure you know before buying.

I really don't know whether have you Domayne, Strathfield Radio and the Good Guys in Perth. You should be able to order a DVD player online from any big retailer such as from Sydney.

Just be careful on what you order and purchase online and maybe better for you to find someone you trust or a retailer who has a knowledge of NTSC otherwise don't waste your time.

I don't waste my time on big retailers such those above including Harvey Norman. I have a local store near me who specially caters for PAL/NTSC players. You have to find one like this near you with professional knowledge of it.

  4. Most multi-systems TV can be hard set to display either just PAL or NTSC. Then, take a copy of your NTSC DVD with you and test out the player.

If it is a multisystems DVD player as well, you should be able to hard set it to either output NTSC or PAL. You should do this test anyway as not all DVD players can convert between PAL and NTSC flawlessly (e.g., skips).

    Regards.
