  1. What settings should I use in the GOP Structure, and Quantize Matrix tabs to reduce the macroblocks the most? I would like to burn to a compliant VCD. And my source is a DVD.

Ugh..not to put too fine a point on it, but VCD blows . That said, if your interested in muxing around with the matrix, search the forum for KWAG. He's done alot of experimenting with these to produce better quality, at the price of compatability. Be warned though, that what you burn may not be compliant.

You would be better served using a newer format, like CVD, or SVCD.

You can use "Soften block noise" under the Quantize matrix as people on this board say that if effectively reduces macroblocks.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

"Soften blocks" option in TMPEG doesn't work as advertized. If you turn the option on, and set both values to 100, the block edges will look sharper and spoil your video. You'll have better results leaving this option un-checked.

  5. when i make a vcd i say 'the heck with being compliant!' and i sacrifice audio quality by taking it down to mono/128k bitrate and 44k sampling rate. then i use a bitrate calc to fit the video on one or two disks. then i encode CBR with as high of bitrate as i can. this method has proven to work good for me. i dont use any filters of any kind as they always seem to do more harm than good. oh, and i capture at 352x240 as i dont see much use in capturing higher than that for vcd. you might want to make a test disk first to make sure your dvd player will play noncompliant vcd's. both of mine will play vcds made at any bitrate. of course all of this is just my way of doing it. your mileage or opinion may vary.

  6. VCD is VHS like at best (in my opinion). SVCD will only look as good, unless you crank the bitrate up, and that means less per disc. Sure, KWAG's templates will help, but I'm not gonna get there. You can try and see for yourself. I find CVD looks by far better, you're speding the same bits to encode fewer pixels and that helps. You can fiddle and go the "X" way, XVCD, XSVCD, XCVD, but you're really talking compatibility issues. It's basically all compromises. You either have to sacrifice some quality, or fit less per disc, or buy a DVD burner lol...
