  1. First of all, its not the chips, but how fast can you write
    to the disk.
    I'm using only dual P-2 400's (over-clocked to 512Mhz),
but I am using a dual-disk EIDE raid system (2x45 GB).
    so...
you might as well wiat for dual athlon system boards,
(due out soon), or just get an EIDE raid card for now.

  2. If you are using FlaskMPEG --> S/VCD or DivX, your HDD speed means nothing. It's all CPU.

DMA and SCSI will make a difference -- but only because of the effects on the CPU.

  3. As far as AMD/P3 go, personally i'd go with the AMD. Generally they are cheaper, and according to many tests generally out preform P3s. Now, if you are like me, and don't give a $hit about reviews and the little bit you save doesn't matter, and like to overclock, then definately go with AMD. I have an 800mhz AMD T-bird, unlocked with a number 2 pencil running at 1.6ghz. Thats my main reason to buy AMD, although it does void your warranty.

As for encoding speed, I have a P4 1.4ghz, and It goes slightly slower than the AMD when its running at 1.4ghz. But if your going to multitask while you encode, then get the AMD, it (as far as i coudl tell) wasn't slowed by multitasking.

  4. I have a duel p3-1ghz and w2k pro according to task master, both cpus are running only about 50% when I am doing a encode,

  5. This is getting a bit mental here about cpu's & what does the best thing & how fast it can shove video around the screen. It's all down to personal preference in the end & those who prefer AMD & those who go for intel, Yeah I know amd is cheap but so far what I've seen they are unstable. I get my own facts by having one at the beginning on a nice asus board & for playing games they are mint but playing networked with intel cpu's on a lan they are shite! sorry to say this but its true, just try playing some games. I've always stuck to intel but even this machine is a pig. In february I bought this pile of pap a P3 1ghz on an asus cusL2 mainboard with 256mb of crucial ram & would it hell work on win98se of millenium I had to use win2000 the same goes for my mates machine an AMD 1ghz on an asus A7v board. The moral of this is no one can win & U go with what U think is right, for speed go AMD & for reliabilty go for intel both have their advantage which is usually the price. I've built machines for years as working for a big company & on my own for sale privately but now I choose some one else for the hastles of incompatibilty. One day we will all have the same so there will be nah mines fater than yours pap. By the way in flask 5.94 I get 6.5 fps average on my intel. Cheers for being bored shitless & reading this life story!!

  6. Like I said at first, as long as you are happy with what you got, if it's a P2/P3/P4 or AMD CPU types, then that's what counts, you'll replace it with a faster one anyway
