  1. Hi,

I am having problems moving .avi movie files on my hard drive.

I do not know where else to post this topic. I have done a forum search and a google search and cannot find the answer, so here goes....

I recently set up 2 computers running Windows XP pro with SP1 and all the latest updates as of 12/24/02. When I burn a divx/avi to disc and then put it back on the hard drive after reformatting I get "Error moving file or folder, make sure no other program is using this file" I have checked in Task Manager and from what I can see nothing is using it, I have no other programs open at the time. I am using Nero 5.5.10 to burn the avi's as a iso. If anyone has had this problem or can point me in the right direction I would be very thankfull.

I occasionally get this and I cannot identify the cause other than I close all apps and disable my virus checker and I am then able to move or delete the problem AVI. It happens so rarely that I don't worry about it.

Sorry I can't help but I thought I would let you know that your aren't the only one.

  3. Thanks q1aqza it is amazing how not feeling like you are the only one can help...lol

I did find this for anyone else having this problem

    http://www.windowsxpatoz.com/cgi-bin/search/index.cgi?answer=1036282972&id=1234567890

I have yet to try this out, but it does 'seem' accurate, cause everytime I try and do anything with a divx/avi (properties, move, delete, etc) ....the cpu and mem resources spike and the comptuter hangs momentarily.....this problem does not happen on my Athlon 2400 but does on both 1000Mhz durons, so perhaps it is a cpu/ram issue .....anyway, I will post again if I have success,

    thanks again q1aqza

I frequently get the same message when I try to drag and drop AVI's between folders in Windows Explorer (XP). I have found a couple of things that sometimes helps. I'll open a different folder then go back to my original and sometimes I can then move the file. Otherwise I double click on the file which start Windows Media Player and I close that while it's still loading the file. Usually I can then move it. Don't know exactly why it works but that's what I do. Maybe some MS expert has a better idea!?

  5. Hello all,

I just wanted to report back and let anyone else know that the fix posted by 0_kewl or myself work with this problem.

    Thanks everyone for the help.
