    All,

I really appreciate some help on this one. I have several AVI (DivX) films that I've been trying to convert to mpeg2 for eventual authoring of a DVD-R. However, I have yet to create a resulting file that I've been happy with. So, here are the problems I'm seeing:

    1) Start with a film at 23.976 (say, for instance, Ice Age) which I check with virtualdub. I set tmpgenc to do "3:2 pulldown when playback" via the selection on the video tab (I have tried checking the 3:2 pulldown box on the advanced tab, but it seems to be for adding additional frames while doing 3:2 pulldown - i.e. what I would call a hard conversion). I make sure the resulting framerate says "23.976fps (internally 29.97fps)". I have tried a number of bitrates including variable, constant quality, etc. Profile set to MP@ML, 720x480 for NTSC DVD. Video source is progressive. I also strip the audio out to a wav file via virtualdub for later conversion to ac3 (I've also tried normal mpeg1 audio - mp2).

After letting it do the conversion, the resulting file length progressively gets more and more out-of-sync with the audio. This also happens when I let tmpgenc do the audio as well. What's the deal with this? Any suggestions on how to fix it? Does this have to do with the specific codec used to encode the AVI?

    2) With everything same as in number 1 above, but change movie. Again start with a movie at 23.976fps. This time the conversion results in a movie that is in sync with the audio, but you get these occasionally "slow motion" scenes that become very disconcerting. Again, any ideas?

I appreciate any help you all can provide! If there is anything else you need to know, let me know and I'll definitely respond!

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but I couldn't find it...

    Thanks,
    Kevin

  2. I have had the same problems as you, but as yet I have not found a solution. I too get the "slow down" problem, using the same settings as you have described.

I hope someone can shed some light on this issue for us.

    Thanks
