  1. I have previously backed up dvd's on my old computer with no problems, using the same method (as far as I know). Firstly I use Smart Ripper, then DVD2Avi, and then TMPGEnc to create the MPEG File. On my old slower computer, it worked without fault every time. Now I have got a 1.8gkz AMD Athlon XP, with 1GB of PC2100 DDR Ram running Win XP Professional version.

Now to get to the point, when it gets to the TMPG Enc stage of the process, on my old computer, it would display the picture in the middle of the screen, and now it seems to go through the process, and doesn't display any image (even though it says in preview options menu, disply with thinning, fix to 320x240 and Automatically Resize the window) all with ticks next to them. It appears to be going through the process, as the source position, remaining time and elapsed time all are moving until 00:00:00 is in the remaining part. It creates a MPEG file, and it is just black and no sound or picture for the whole length of the movie.

When I have an avi file, and try to create it into an MPEG file, previously it was just done by selecting the avi file through TMPGEnc, and then pressing Start and the picture showed and the process begun. Now It still does this only it doesn't have the picture, and when it is completed, it has the black as the picture and no sound.

ANY ONE WHO HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT THE PROBLEM MAY BE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS IT IS GETTING VERY FRUSTRATING.

    HELP, HELP, HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot be 100% sure for you but I think it may be in your DVD to AVI or smartripper.

Make sure your settings there are the same as they were in the old machine. Thats one.

Next, did you install ASPI ? I bet you might not have.

XP has its own CD/DVD rom layer that , well....SUCKS.

ADAPTEC makes an XP version of ASPI but DO NOT USE IT.

Look for FORCEASPI on the web(I usually use this one)
    http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/frcaspi.cfm

Ignore what it says about not for xp...It is ..Believe me and very stable.

Now try your smartripper and dvd2avi settings and make sure they are same as before.

    Let me know......Rob

  3. check your codecs.
it sounds like you are missing a codec , like divx or somthing.
try to install a player for your dvd's (powerdvd or something like that)
maybe you are missing the mpeg2 decoder.
HELL AINT A BAD PLACE TO BE

  4. this probably isnt the answer you are looking for, but try EAZY VCD (link on the left under tools) which is a one click solution to creating VCD's. If you want to go to a "better" end process, try DVD2SVCD, which does CVD and looks much better than VCD(although your DVD player may not be able to play them). Anyway, with EAZY VCD, all of the settings are done for you and if it works, then there is something wrong with your original setup.

I had one other thought on this, are you by chance using two pass mode when you create the VCD's this time? If you do 2 pass on your encode, that will happen until it gets to 50% of the process being done. Figured you had already known that, but you can never be sure.

  5. Why should one use ForceASPI on winXP instead of the official Adaptec version? Not to mention, XP should work fine with all this software out of the box (my pro version does). Why does one need to install ASPI software?
