  1. About a year ago I went through almost
    a full spindle's worth of CDR's and CDRW's
before I found a particular brand that
would play on my Sony DVD. The deck has no
trouble reading retail VCD's and SVCD's
(and of course, DVD's) which makes me
curious as to what process differences
there are between burning a VCD and pressing
    a retail VCD. Any info?

    Thanks,

  2. Retail VCDs (good ones) are proper CD media. That is, they are like any other CD type media you can buy in a shop (audio CDs, CD-ROMs, etc). They are manufactured by stamping the data onto the polycarbonate substrate, putting on a thin layer of aluminium and then protecting that layer with lacquer.

All CD players and DVD players can read CDs.

CD-R and CD-RW aren't really CDs in the sense as the above manufacturing process. They just optically LOOK like a CD in a standard CD or CD-ROM drive (this is at least true for CD-R). DVD drives (especially older ones) weren't designed to read CD-R media and do so poorly or erratically.

  4. The type of CD-rw that works on the Sony Deck is the Memorex CDRW Platinum. Those were the only CDRW's i could find couple hundred dollars later. If you buy the CDR's from comp usa in the 50 pack that say prinko on the clear part of the inside those also work but for some reason you cant copy them correctly get freezes pixilation ect
