    Maybe this ?!?

If TMPGEnc freezes or crashes when converting or you receive errors such as
    Unexpected decimal point calculation
Illegal floating decimal point calculation order
Try first to change the codec reader settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and increase the priority to 1 or 2 and try open the video.
Or try to convert the audio to wav before converting(If you have problems extracting the audio using Virtualdub try use Goldwave or AVI2WAV).
Or try to repair the AVI,DivX or the ASF.
Or try to use avidefreezer to fix your video source.

Look into the "how to" of this page

  3. hi, i'm having serious problems converting ASF to VCD using TMPGEnc. quite often, TMPGEnc will freeze up my entire system (forcing me to reboot my PC) while converting a file. however, it doesn't happen everytime with the same file at the same spot. like it may freeze up while converting a particular ASF file, but after i reboot and try converting the same ASF file, it might work, or it might freeze up at a different %.

i've tried everything mentioned in the post above, but nothing seems to work. am i the only one facing this problem? i know not that many people bother with ASF files in the first place, but i hope somebody could help me out.

    thanks in advance!

Could also be hardware related? Try using the CCE demo to encode - if you get similar problems it's likely.

Try a Memory testing program (e.g. MEMTEST) and give your RAM a thorough check out.

May also be heat related? This is pretty processor intensive stuff and your CPU can get quite hot.

  5. unfortunately, i can't test with CCE cos i'm trying to convert an ASF file and CCE doesn't handle ASF. i'm running an AMD Athlon XP 1900+, and the CPU temperature is about 65-67 degrees Celsius. is that too hot? i live in a really hot country so it's pretty normal for a CPU to average around 60 degrees here even when it's idle.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that 70degC is the maximum you should really run at, so you're pushing it quote close. According to the tech. specs. of the Athlon on AMD's website, they are rated to 90degC, but that'll be the absolute limit - you don't want to go there.

I try and keep mine below 55degC.

When I first built this PC, I had a similar problem with encoding with TMPG and CCE, and in one game. I ram MEMTEST and it showed errors in the RAM. Fortunately, it was under warranty and the supplier swapped it straight off.

You could try one of the hardware testing tools that 'burns' in your PC to check it's not hardware related, or just take the side of the case off and blow a big desk fan into it whilst encoding to see if it's heat.
