Installing the latest drivers from ATI's website, DirectX 8.0a, and the DirectShow fix for video capture from Microsoft should get you all ready to go. Works flawlessly for me.

Please go to http://www.virtualdub.org.
Open news, open news archive and read recommendations form Avery Lee (VirtualDub programmer).
And download new VirtualDub 1.4.7. or 1.4.6. this two versions is released especially for ATI hardware.

Hmm, i installed dx8a, installed the dv update and the latest drivers from ati ... i still get "error: no capture driver available".
I cant seem to find anything on MS site about DirectShow fix ...

Do you have a SP2 vdm to vfw wrapper?
Read information on http://www.virtualdub.org and change your registry.

First, install DirectX 8.0a, the DirectX 8 DV update, and Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. SP2 is mandatory, because it includes a file that you may not have. Once you have it installed, check for a file called \WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386\vfwwdm32.dll. Copy it to \WINNT\System32\vfwwdm32.dll, if a file by that name doesn't already exist there.
Next, open up Registry Editor (regedit.exe), and drill down to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\MediaResources\msvideo
Create a key called MSVideo.VFWWDM, and in it, create the following entries:
Name Type Data
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Description REG_SZ Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)
Driver REG_SZ vfwwdm32.dll
The Microsoft VFWWDM wrapper should now appear as a usable capture device in VFW-based capture programs. Another method is to try the following strings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion:
Name Type Data
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
drivers.desc\vfwwdm32.dll REG_SZ Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)
Drivers32\msvideo REG_SZ vfwwdm32.dll
If msvideo already exists, use msvideo1, msvideo2, etc. With this method you will most likely get two video capture entries, one that works and one that doesn't. If this occurs, check to see if the MSVideo.VFWWDM key has been created; if it has, back out the second patch and apply the first.

There is an additional download from microsoft I believe is called Video Capture Update for DirectX 8.0. Is aimed for video capture. I had the same problem and fixed by installing it.
Here is the link
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=28377
Let me know if it works. After installing it also re-apply SP2 for WIN2K

Well it would seem that this may be a hopeless battle. I do have all the latest drivers and the latest wrapper seems to be working. I can capture with any program, mmc7.1, virtualdub and iuvcr.
From within virtualdub - Am I doing this right? I select "Capture->Preferences" select the capture device "0- Microsoft WDM Capture (Win32)"
Then I select the capture source to be "ATI bt829 capture" and I can still only capture at ???x240 or ???x288....
