This may sound stupid but...
I have got the above dvd writer. I bought some DVD-R (the ones I was told to use) and I am trying to burn a file (MPEG2) using nero. When I list the Recorder Devices it finds it but when I go to record I get an error message saying
The complication can only be written on a CD-R/RW.
I thought that was what I had.
Is DVD-R and DVD-RAM the same thing.

If you are trying to write a VCD or SVCD you must use CD-R discs, not DVD-R/RAM.I don't have a bad attitude...
