Is it possible to actually locate the part of the divx file that actually tells the hardware/software players that it is say codec 5.02?
and is it possible to edit this?

You can run a file through the Gspot program (available in the tools section on the left) which will tell you what video and audio codecs were used for the file, but I don't think you can edit it!
