i am converting files to mpeg to fit on a cd, each file (in avi form) is 100-150mb in sixe and is 40min long, When they are converted they are around 400mb.
Is there anyway to reduce the size so that i can put 2 files on one cd.
I am using the latest version of tmpgenc

It is most likely the bitrate you are encoding to in TMPGEnc.
You can lower the bitrate by selecting Settings button, then go to Video and Audio tabs and lower the bitrate.
Also, you could lower the resolution (Size) of the video, and the Sampling Frequency of the Audio.
Beware, that lowering any of these could adversely affect the quality of your output."speed's just a question of money. How fast can you go?" - Mad Max, 1979 -
yea, he's right. Your quality will drop. For the start you can lower your bitrate for audio and video. I wouldn't recommend changing the resolution size though.
Give us some info on the file and we can thing of something.
Oh, another thing, reencode your file's audio to VRB (if it's in something else)

Depending on if you're going for a VCD or SVCD, your options are limited:
For VCD, there's nothing you can do - 1150 kbps CBR video, 224 kbps audio is what makes a VCD MPEG. Only parameter that affects file size is duration of movie.
For XVCD (=out of specs VCD) you can try VBR, and/or change bitrates. Lowering bitrate reduces video/audio quality, while using VBR at a lower average bitrate but with high motion search precision migth get you good results. This XVCD will however not play on all VCD players.
For SVCD, you have greater flexibility within standards - only max bitrates are in the standard. As the resolution is higher than VCD, the bitrate required is higher than VCD.
Video resolution and audio sampling frequency has absolutely nothing to do with the size of the MPEG - only bitrates and duration.
