Just a quick one...
I can easily create a cd-r with mp3 tracks, that play in my dvd player, but can I create a dvd-r with mp3 tracks on it, so it will play in my dvd player.
Is it a simple matter of burning them in folders with Nero?
I am thinking of making the ultimate music collection, I'm guessing you
could get around 700 songs depending on size.
What do you think (and which artists should be on there?)
edit: maybe this post should be moved? Not sure where to though

Only your DVD will be able to answer that question. Maybe try a DVD-RW first.
In terms of "which artists should be on there"...
only burn MP3s of quality Australian artists like:
Silverchair, Kylie, Disco Montego, Taxiride & The Vines"speed's just a question of money. How fast can you go?" - Mad Max, 1979
