I tried putting one of my kids Thomas the Tank Engine videos onto SVCD. The picture looks fine during the capture but then when I open the file the picture as a huge white banner across the middle. It takes up the middle half of the screen.
I first noticed it when trying to source range inTMPGE. I played back the file in PoweDVD and the white was still there.
I tried recapturing in ComproPVR but the file still had the white banner.
I can only put it down to the Macrovisioncopy protection on the tape.
Anyone else had this or know a solution ?
Thanks

If it is Macrovision, you can use a device to remove it from the analogue signal (time base corrector / "video signal cleaner" ).

sima copy videomaster about 45.oo placed between playback and record machines OR terapin vcd recorder does it all and makes a video cd. This unit goes around 250.oo . Both remove macrovision and enhance video quality. GOOD LUCK!
p.s. i have both and only use terapin 8) -
It's not Macrovision.
It's caused by an incompatability between your WDM video capture drivers and your current nVidia drivers. You'll have to find versions of both that cooperate with eachother -- I'm using nVidia reference drivers v41.09 and WDM 1.04 atm, and they both like eachother. However, if I update WDM to say v1.08, then I get the big white horizontal line. -
Hilljack. How sure are you about this?, because i've used the drivers from the setup CD. Are they incompatable with each other even though there from the same CD that comes with the video card?
I got the white banner from all the DVD's except the movie 'Life Of Brain'
If we need to install new drivers then why does 1 movie work?

I@n S,
I'm quite confident in my theory -- Here's my story...
Up until a couple days ago, I've been running v21.81 ASUS GeForce drivers because every time I've ever tried to update them, they break my WDM setup which causes me to have to redo my DeLogo filter mask's for video capturing from TV.
Well, I like to play Unreal Tournament 2003, and these ancient drivers, though excellent for video capture, aren't too stable with UT... So...
A couple weeks ago, I thought I'd give it another go with whatever version ASUS has dragged their asses out of bed and updated too (31.something I think). Big suprise, my current WDM gets broken and 1.04 won't reinstall with those drivers, so I have to update -- well what do you know, in comes this huge white line crossing my capture window (from TV, not DVD or VHS or anything... from TV). So I play around with a couple other versions of WDM that I can scrounge up from different places. 1.04 won't work and all but 1.08 cause the white line to appear. So, as usual I ditch everything and go back to good old 21.81 and 1.04.
Then a couple days ago, I decide to give it another go, this time with the nVidia reference drivers (41.09) and to my suprise, they install AND they don't touch my 1.04 WDM's!! So, my theory, is that it all depends on the version of video card drivers you use in conjunction with the version of WDM's you use, and whether or not each driver knows about the other.
That's my theory -
The only reason I thought it was a copy protection issue was that my tv and camcorder captures don't have the big white banner across the middle, just VHS capture.

Odd. Everyone else don't get the lines with v1.08, but do with others... 1.08 doesn't macrovision protection in it. Search other threads.

I use an Asus 7700 deluxe (GeForce2 GTS) card and have had similar problems with the big white box in the middle of the window. I am currently running Nvidia Reference drivers and the Nvidia WDM 1.08. This combination seems to work. Every time I try to update ANY ASUS tools, Asus Live, Asus Digital VCR or the Asus graphics drivers I get that damn white box. It seems to me that the problem is not with the combination of drivers and WDM but with using ANY ASUS drivers/WDM. This makes me mad because it means I can't use my 3D glasses or other ASUS features, but my capturing is more important. Has ANYONE gotten the newest ASUS drivers and any WDM combo to work? I'd hate to go backwards in drivers.

It certainly is Macrovision giving you the white bar and I successfully stopped this happening on my captured videos with NVIDIA WDM v1.08.
Leadtek earlier advised me that Macrovision is the cause of the white bar. I removed the later drivers, all of it, which was installed from the manufactured CD. Then I re-installed the the older WDM drivers, v1.08 and this only takes a few seconds, the computer re-started then fixed.
My capture card is NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4200, an awesome capture device. No more problems, the white bar is gone. -
It definitely is Macrovision copy protection.

Just an Update! I got greedy and tried to install the Latest Nvidia drivers (They claim a 25% increase in performance) Version 41.09 and the latest Nvidia WDM driver Version 1.22. Well, this was a mistake. Guess the 41.09 drivers do NOT include the capture drivers. So I put back the drivers I had, which I've now confirmed are the Personal Cinema drivers, version 30.82 which include the WDM drivers version 1.17. HOWEVER, this solution gave me the White Bar problem. So I just installed the Nvidia WDM drivers version 1.08 over top, and now it all works just fine again. Just wanted to be more specific with the drivers and all in case anyone else is trying to capture with an ASUS (Nvidia) board.

do you get something similar to that?
if yes i found the solution for the nvidia cards
you might want to download the WDW 1.08 here
ftp://download1.nvidia.com/Windows/23.11/WDM_1.08.exe
you need to remove the newest drivers else it wont work
and here another testimony

The white bar on my captured DVD now gone with the WDM driver v1.08 installed. I successfully captured a DVD musicvideo and it is about time.
I blasted the makers of the DVD's and the movie industry with their insanity of having macrovision and DVD regions. The same goes for the CD music industry with their CD copy protection. It is ridiculous; they are causing me the inconvenience, the time and money. Who do think they are kidding, they aren’t going to get any more revenue.
This is fair use, my own legitimate DVD, CD and VHS for my use and for my own reason to back up into the computer’s hard drive, in the car. I should have a right to backup another copy of my own DVD movie at home. **** RIAA and **** MPAA.
Thanks everyone.

This white line is exactly what I get.
I can't get any picture on the screen when using WDM 1.08.
I installed the 1.08 drivers after removing the 1.17 then reinstalled ComproPVR (bundled capture software that came with Compro Videomate Cinema)
Now my Compro PVR won't show anything on the screen from the capture inputs. Vitualdub also gives me a black screen (no capture picture) with 1.08
I went back to the 1.17 and now the video from the inputs has returned to the screen.
Perhaps my video card, AV capture box and bundled software won't work with WDM as old as 1.08.
nVidia display driver 30.82 is installed.
Any ideas?
Also, but not so important,
When I run VirDub on PC startup errors pop up about capture stuff not detected. I close this then open ComproPVR, close PVR, reopen VirDub and everything is fine.
Question, Why does VirDub need the other program opened first before it works ?
Thanks very much.
Happy and safe holidays to all -
maybe try 41.09 video card drivers. I've got 41.09 and WDM 1.08 running just fine. It could be the output from whatevers playing it. I think some players have copy protection from the output and will only wook with the TV. I'm not sure though. I think try 41.09 with WDM 1.08. It worked for me!
Good luck,
Merry christmas and all that stuff
