  1. I'm probably missing something, but here goes:

I'm capturing from my video source, which will be Hi8 when I'm ready, but using the composite video output from my satellite dish for testing purposes. Capturing with Scenealyzer using type 2 (720x480 NTSC). The resulting AVI file quality is excellent. Then using TEMPEnc Plus to convert to MPEG-2 in preparation for DVD authoring.

I'm having two problems, both happen with the original camera pans or zooms. The video gets real choppy, or there is some really annoying horizontal lines. It looks kindof like your watching TV on a non-terminated line if that makes any sense.

I thought that switching from CBR ot VBR would help. I've also done some other tweaking to no avail.

Any idea what the problem is?

  2. Possibly an interlacing problem.
When encoding in TmpGenc, click settings and go to the advanced tab. Make soure Video source type is set to interlaced. If you still have the same problem, change the field order from whatever it is set to, to the alternative value.

I can think of two possibilities. Either your field order is wrong, or your simply seeing interlacing. It's possible you can remove it, if the source has been telecined.

Check the 'Classifying Hi-Res' section. It will help you to identify if your video can be inverse telecined (IVTC) to remove those extra interlaced frames. You save both space, and bitrate by doing this. If your source is true interlaced material, then you can try to deinterlace it via various filters/methods. The guides section has a multitude of ways you can do this, but it's not strictly necessary, as the final product, when viewed on your television will usually look fine. It's only when you view these on a PC, that you see both fields at the same time, and notice the interlacing at all.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...
