  1. I've had my machine hooked up for about two weeks with no problems either in transferring VHS footage or recording new stuff. But I've had the same thing happen two days in a row. I had the timer set to record on to a DVD-R. Had a new DVD-R in the drive, but the recording didn't happen. When I turn the machine on, it gives me the "recovering" message.

According to the manual, you get this message when there was a power outage. I have the machine plugged into a surge protector with battery backup. And I know that that power wasn't out for long because my VCR clock blinks if the power is off for more than a minute.

Does anyone have a clue what is going on? I should be able to trust that when I set the timer, it will record.

    Thanks in advance,
    Anne

P.S. I'm using Memorex DVD-Rs which I have had no problem with up to this point (I have used about 20 so far).

  2. I have a similar problem with my newly purchased UK PAL DMR-E30 ... up to today, it has worked fine with Panasonic DVD-RAM disks and Bulkpaq DVD-Rs (a couple of which failed to finalise properly, but still play fine on the unit itself).

Tonight, using (several) brand new DVD-Rs, after just a few seconds of recording, the screen went blank, the Standby light blinked a few times, and the unit's display says 'Recover'. I swapped the power cable, checked all the connections etc, and managed to burn onto a DVD-R. When finalised, this disk will only play up to a certain point, then the picture degrades and the disk stops - the same thing happened on my Samsung DVD player I'm told 'This disc cannot be played' after the picture starts to go wonky.

I tried again, with a brand new DVD-R, and the 'power failure' thing happened again.

I'm currently an hour into a new recording on another brand new DVD-R, but not convinced it will work when it's finished (if it gets that far).

The unit has performed brilliantly up until now - I've only been using it since just before New Year, and it's only had to cope with fairly moderate use - a recording I made on timer during the night worked fine!

I'm wondering should I get an engineer out on my extended warranty?

    Cheers for any help,

    Mark

PS - one factor which may be important is that I've moved the unit up and down stairs a few times - could this be part of the problem? I've been very careful - honest!

  3. I have a DMR -E20 and had all types of problems if trying use a DVD-R in the timer mode, alot of coasters or no record at all on a DVD-R, problem went away soon as I started using Rams for timer recordings, something about the DVD-R's no burning to the disc properly once the timer goes off.

  4. I don't know much about electronics, so hopefully some of you tech types can tell me if I'm right or wrong.

I had this happen to me once, and it was on a DVD-R brand that always works. So, I figure it was a player problem rather than a disk problem. I live close to a navy base, and am in line-of-sight with ships festooned with various RF and IR emitters. Military helos also fly by quite often, and I know these are equipped with IR countermeasures.

Thinking this might be the problem, I've taken to covering the remote sensor window whenever I am recording. Haven't had the "recovering" problem since. I know covering the sensor window won't help much with RF except to block out a very weak signal, but perhaps it makes a difference with IR.

  5. Try another media, it gives that message if it doesn't like the media you put in. Tryputting in a dvdrw, which it doesn't support & youll see that message too. Don't use memorex, if you can get another type.
