  1. i have 30 cdr's that i have done from my vhs home movies. all mpeg2, 352 x 480.

i have used the "vcd header trick" converting these mpeg2 files into a vcd so i can watch them im my dvd player (panasonic). however, images have strong block noises.

is it possible to convert somehow these non-standard mpeg2 files and then reducing the block noise? tmpgenc can do that?

The block noise is actually part of the MPEG now, and therefore part of the movie. Moving it to another format will just take the block noise to the new format.

  3. tks for the reply, but i have tried the following options, with great
    reduction on block noises:

    1) apply dvd2avi on the mpeg2 file, open the resulting d2v & mpa files with tmpgenc, and re-encoded as a vcd mpeg1 standard, file size reduced from 28 MB (2 minutes sample) to 21 MB.

with this solution, some little block noise is present, but great quality was obtained with

    2) applying dvd2 on the mpeg2 file (352 x 480, vbr 2000 medium), open d2v & mpa with tmpgenc and re-encoded as a cdv with 352 x 480, vbr 2-pass min=0, max=2520, med=2150). file size increazed from 28 to 38 MB (2 min. sample - about 45 min on a 80 min cdr). however video quality is really great!!

  4. just forgot to mention that i applied the "vcd header trick" to item 2 above.

    also: computer time to re-encode:

1 above = 3 times the video time.
    2 above = 13 times the video
