Lately... I have been doing several SVCD conversions from DVD....
NTSC film based
on the TMPGEnc video screen, I have not been hitting the 3:2 pulldown on playback option, but the non-interlace option.
My hardward standalone can play this ok...(apex 600a).. is it possible that the hardware standalone recognizes the 23.97 fps and does it's own conversion to 30fps for the system? (ntsc)?
because I have not been hitting the 3:2 pulldown on playback, is it possible that is why my svcd's are not compatible on my sisters rca unit, (but my vcd's are)
I have read that you should encode at 23.97 fps for space and quality considerations, but do a 3:2 pull down flag (which I have been leaving out)..
ON my rips.. is it possible to reencode my SVCD (mpg2 cbr) streams to include this 3:2 pulldown.. if I feel I should add one for compatability?
Thanks for some help..

if you already have the 23.976fps file, and want to add flags for a realtime 3:2 pulldown on playback, there's this program called "pulldown" that will add the proper rff tags, but will not increase file size.
you can grab it at doom9.net -
I have seen and used the pulldown.exe program.. in my DVD2SVCD conversion process... but I still like my older conversion process better (slightly faster, more control)..
I know I can just copy the Mpeg file from the mpeg directory on my SVCD disk, back to the hard drive, use VCD gear to do an mpg-mpg conversion, then use pulldown.exe to put the flags in to do the 3:2 pulldown...
but ever since I have been using VCD imager to make the bin/cue files for my vcds/svcds, I have had not syncing issues whatsover... is it possible the vcd imager program adds the flags to the file? probably not,, but a thought..
also... is my apex doing this conversion, where other players would not? I always do my vcd versions without the 3:2 pulldown as well, and encode them at 23.976 too.. no problems whatsoever on my apex 600 a

vcds support ntsc film and in fact it is impossible to use the 3:2 pulldown and still have a compliant vcd. Only svcds and dvds support the pulldown function.
Svcds encoded in ntsc film require the 3:2 pulldown to be guaranteed proper playback on svcd compliant dvd players but this is not to say that you wont still get proper playback without the 3:2 pulldown, though it is somewhat rare and your svcd will in fact be non-compliant. If your current svcds are playing ok then just leave them alone. You possibly might have to re-author them with the pulldown if you ever upgrade your dvd player but just cross that bridge when you get to it. Who knows, by then it might be time to re-author them on dvd media anyway...
As far as the svcds not playing on your sisters rca dvd player, I doubt its the lack of pulldown. Without the pulldown enabled your svcd should still play, it will just skip every couple of seconds or so.
I have that same model of apex and it will not play ntsc film svcds without the pulldown, although different firmware versions could be the reason. But I suspect that your assumption is correct that the dvd player is doing the conversion for you even though the flags are not present. -
Thanks adam for the clarification..
I feel special to have a moderator post
no really, thanks for the tips...
I have the apex 600a and I upgraded my firmware (and system board) to flash rom.. I have the most recent version (N6 with R0 and Macro off)
all I have to do to make them compliant then, it seems is to just run the pulldown.exe on my 23.976 mpg stream, and it will add the appropiate flags.. then make image with vcd imager.. or just do that function in tmpgenc..
If I am wrong, then please correct me...
thanks again.
