  1. I have an old vhs camcorder made by panasonic. I am wanting to capture my vhs tapes to my pc and burn them to a disk that I can watch in my DVD player.

    1. I bought Pinnacle Linx USB capture card and Pinncale studio 8.
    2. I captured image at the best possible analog resolution without any frame drops. This resolution was 320x240.
    3. Next I converted movie to MPEG 1 for quality and compression size.
    4. I burn the movie as a VCD and play it in my DVD player.
    5. It works!!
    6. It looks like crap.
    7. I know, garbage in, garbage out.
    8. What can I do to see this movie on my DVD player as clear as I would through my VCR?

Please help, I plan to buy a mini-dv, but that doesn't help me with the 10 tapes I already have.

    Thanks
    Steve

Also, try searching "VHS" in forums for other posts. Most info can be found via a search.

Well, not really. You CAN make a watchable VCD conversion of your VHS tapes but you are going to have to capture at something above 320x240 in my humble opinion.....

  4. Thanks,

I'm totally new to this so bear with me. I have read a number of posts related to VHS, but am still not "getting it".

I capture the analog vhs tape at 320x240(or whatever the best quality capture is in studio 8, the frame rate is 29.9 fps, and the bit rate is fixed...something like 4Mbs)

I convert that to mpeg1 and burn it as a vcd. I can view it in my dvd, but it looks very lossy or as I call it, CRAP on the screen.

What I NEED to know. Is there other software out there that is going to allow me to capture at higher bit rates and resolutions so that I can burn it as a VCD, SVCD, or DVD and watch it in my DVD player having the ORIGINAL quality that I get from watching through my VHS. AND what setting would I use. I didn't find any of this information in the FAQ for newbies.

    Somebody please help me!!!

  5. You must capture better than 320x240. USB cap devices get slammed pretty regularly here (the 1.0 ones anyway). You may want to try a cheap tv tuner card (like mine). I capture at 352x480 when I make VCDs and while they aren't "DVD" quality, the are very watchable.
