Hi
It has been suggested to me that frame serving speeds up encoding?????
For example I capture to mpeg2 using my capture card then I use TMPGEnc to encode.
It has been suggested that if I run the original file through DVD2AVI then load into TMPGEnc I will see faster encoding times.(When doing SVCD)
Can anyone confirm or deny this??????????
Cheers

2 things:
1) I realize you waited almost half a day, but have some patience
2) if you're capturing mpeg2, what are you encoding? SVCD is an mpeg2 file w/certain constraints on resolution and bitrate, etc.

My expierience is that frame serving thru DVD2AVI does speedup encodeing in Tmpeg, not a lot around 10-15%. I assume your encodeing your captured mpeg to reduce it's size to fit on a CDR? -
Not to discout anything your saying Wulf, as I haven't tried it, and therefore can't say either way...
Your adding in another process on top of what TMPGenc can do directly. It would seem that things should be slower. I wonder why the odd results?Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
Hi
I capture 720 x 576 Bitrate 8000 Mpeg2
I then encode to VCD or SVCD.

Frameseving is easy to setup. Use the guides here, or on www.doom9.org. Encode a small 5 minute clip. If your going to frameserve, I would suggest DVD2AVI -->MPEG2DEC-->AVISynth --> CCE/TMPGenc
I'd be interested in your results.Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
I have yet to be persuaded of the benefits.......
Please explain why I need to frameserve.
Cheers

Frameserving allows you to essentially go from source file (whether MPEG, AVI, VOB, or whatever) directly to end result (MPEG in this case). MPEG is not editable in any normal sense of the word. The file must normally be converted back to AVI before you can edit it (e.g resize, letterbox, etc). Frameserving removes the need to create an AVI. The source is 'served' to the encoder, with any editing options done on the fly, and encoded into the destination format.
If your source file is already AVI, then frameserving gains you nothing that I can see of the top of my head, unless you simply prefer AVISynth to VirtualDub (I do).
If your encoder reads MPEG directly (TMPGenc can), the again, I don't see any benefit, although this thread indicates there is a speed gain to be had. I've never tested this, so take the info for what it's worth.Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
So the only possible advantage I COULD achieve is speed.
Thanks things are clearer now.

Not exactly. By frameserving, you have more flexability, since you can perform other operations on your source file before it's encoded. These could be operations that your encoder (TMPGenc in this case) doesn't support, or doesn't do well.
Again, it just depends on your needs.Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything... -
Exactly. There are hundreds of plugins and filters in AVISynth to allow you to tweak the content of your source file before encoding. At the expense of sounding like a computer geek
, once you learn the capabilities, it almost fun to just play around with these filters, and plugins, just to see what they'll do.

I may be technically wrong here but in concept I may be correct, but I think a benefit to frameserving using DVD2AVI from an existing MPEG is that it saves time in the YUV/RGB colour conversion, e.g. if you encode directly in TMPG it will convert from one to the other and then back again whereas DVD2AVI saves one of these conversions - hopefully somebody more technical in that field can elaborate further - or correct me !!

I only worry about what I'm coming from. I have no idea whether MPEG uses YUY2, or RGB for colorspace.
