{*sigh*} Yet another OGG formatted AVI . Can someone tell me why this is in use? Granted, I haven't spent any time researching this one, simply because it irritates me. It's a pain to convert, the standard tools don't work, don't understand it, or simply don't like it. Why then must they continue to use it?

What are the technical specifications for OGG audio, and what are it's advantages over existing MP2, MP3, AC3 formats?

Any of you more experienced with this format, is there any other way to extract this quick and dirty, ala VirtualDub?

Better compression, and free license. The site doesn't mention any tools to convert FROM Ogg, although I did find some software in the 'other' section that says it will convert ogg audio. No idea if it can extract the audio from an AVI.

Does NANDub support OGG audio extraction?

I think current versions of WinAmp and BeSweet both read ogg files. WinAmp can convert to wav with the disk writer output plugin, if you didn't know already.

To get the ogg stream out of the AVI open it in VirtualDub, set audio to "direct stream copy" and "save wav". You'll actually get the raw audio stream, so you can also extract MP3 audio to an MP3 instead of a WAV that way.

VirtualDub just gives me an error when attempting to even open these:

    "Cannot determine file type"

This apparently does not work with 5.1 AC3 OGM files. So far, the only thing I've found that works is decomress.exe, which trashes the 5.1 sound, and gives me two channel PCM stereo. GraphEdit only gives 'Out Of Memory' errors.

I would like to retain the raw AC3 sound, as I burn these to DVD.

This is what keeps these types of techs from catching on. They are not portable, and they don't play well with others. This type of toolset should have been available from the beginning. Look what happened to WMV. MS pretty much killed it because you couldn't convert FROM that format, although they were more than happy to help you convert TO the format.

    Ok..I feel better. Suggestion anyone?

  6. go to doom9.org and search the forums for virtualdub mod and look in the new formats section. It is not that hard to convert and though I don't use it anymore, I hear that these new tools makes it easy to convert.

tuco, if this does what it appears to, then I owe you big time. OGG, and OGM has been a pain in my arse since it came out. Unfortunately I'm at work, but I'll let you know how it goes...

No such glory. The file does indeed load the first AVI, but it refuses to load the other segments (it's in two parts). Also tried the AVISynth option with no luck. I'll put a new topic out on using the SegmentedAVISource method in AVISynth, as I've never used it, and I'm not having much luck with my first attempt.

Old post. I found a solution for this a long time ago. You lost any special formatting, like 5.1 sound, but you are able to convert.

Since then, BeSweet has included support for OGG input. I haven't tried it, but you may even be able to keep the 5.1 sound. Make sure you get the Latest BeSweet GUI and BeSweet.EXE file before trying it.

  12. goldwave do extract the audio part to a wav file.

You use the BeSweet GUI with BeSweet.EXE, unless you just like typing

It should work fine, and it should extract the audio directly from the OGG file.
