  1. Hi!

How do I burn the file to a Dvd-r so I can watch it on a Dvd-standalone?

Use DVDworkshop to create a DVD folder (VIDEO_TS) and then use nero to burn it

  3. Does it take long time to make a DvD-folder with Workshop?

  5. OK, I managed to make an approximate 4 GB mpeg file now but I can't seem to get it to import in the author program i use, Spruce UP. Anyone have luck using Spruce UP after creating an mpeg in this way?? Also, if I get the DVD Workshop demo, would it allow me to author the whole file as a trial?? Thanks for the help again.

  6. More info on my troubles. I got DVD Workshop on my 1,8 ghz P4 loaded up. I tried to take the 4 gig mpeg file created with DVDx and drag and drop it into workshop. As someone above said, it tried to do some kind of new encoding on the 4 gig file, which took DVD Workshop like 3 hours or so. Unfortunately I tried to let it burn this to a DVD and it said there wasn't enought room left on the disc (coaster now). Why is DVD Workshop trying to recode my 4 gig mpeg file? Can I just have it make an image in Workshop and burn that using Nero or Prassi? Any more help would be welcome.

  7. I'm having the same problems. I got through everything successfully, up to the point of actually burning the VIDEO_TS dir to a DVD. I created a 4.1GB mpeg with DVDx that is totally compliant and DVD Workshop doesn't try to do a conversion on it, but when I create the VIDEO_TS folder, it ends up being 5.2GB, which won't fit on the DVDr.

What's up with that? Am I missing a step or something?

I've tried a number of different combinations of pre-defined and custom quality/bit rate settings in DVD Workshop, but I can't get the output small enough. I even tried using workshop to do the burn, but that failed as well.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

Ok, i think there is a sound conversion problem, DVDworkshop doesn't convert the movie but it does convert the sound. Probebly in the input settings, you don't have the setting for 48 khz. If it's something different than 48 khz it's not DVD compliant and DVDworkshop converts it to PCM or something and then you will get a huge soundfile and that explains the increase in filesize.

i'm trying to get a pic in, but it doesn't seem to work i'll try later
Ok, i've put this as addon in the guide, I think i've should have told this along with the rest of the guide.

  9. Ok, when I try to take the mpeg file (normally I make a 4 gig one) from the DVDx program and put it in DVD workshop it still always converts the file I have from DVDx. I drop the media in and go right to the final step. I then try and use the custom option for making the DVD. You can choose mpeg audio here (which is what I pick). DVD workshop gives you a warning about mpeg audio not always being compliant with DVD, but I pick it anyway and it works. I have to play with the video compression bit rates to make sure the size stays around 4 gigs. I still don't see a way to put the DVDx file in Workshop and get it to not convert it again. But my way does produce a good DVD. It just takes like another 3 hours or so for DVD workshop to convert it and burn the DVD. Anyone know a way in workshop (or other authoring program) around this??

  11. Ok, how can I create subtitles (like those on DVD) so I could show or hide them.

  12. You're not going to get menu selectable subtitles on a SVCD, but you can burn 'em in permanently with the "Input" settings.

Thanks for such a simple method of backing up DVDs. I, too, have had problems in that dvd workshop took a long time to create the DVD, but I haven't tried the latest sound setting.

  13. The latest version of DVD WS (1.3) has a setting to prevent reencoding the movie; earlier versions didn't have this option. Also if you burn the movie with Nero remember to burn the DVD as DVD/UDF setting Udf 1.02, for better compatibility with standalone DVD players (read this http://www.vcdhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127624 for more information on Nero).

  14. You know, you could just as easily use ifoedit and strip out the extra audio and subtitle files you don't need. It takes ~5-10 minutes, then you're ready to burn!!!!
    Sometimes, ya just gotta.....umm, what's the word........FART???

  15. Igalan, thanks for the info on DVD WS 1.3. Is there a demo/trial of this version out on Ulead's website yet? I shall try and get a trial of it and try this method in the next day or so. Hopefully this will help.

  16. As far as I know the update to version 1.3 is available for registered users only. I don't know if it will update the trial, but you can use google to search for the update...

  17. No, you can't install the update 1.3 over the trial. I already tried it, and it says a copy of Workshop doesn't exist.

But I thought 1.2 didnt' reencode if the mpeg2 was up to specs.

  18. Every mpeg file I 've created with DVDx as in the above method has been reencoded by DVD WS (using 1.2 trial). I've done this 3-4 times now, each time it wants to reencode it (takes 3-4 hours on my P4 machine). The DVD eventually comes out ok, but the whole process is like sometimes close to 16 hours (sometimes up to 12 hours for first DVDx mpeg creation and like 3-4 more for the DVD WS part). This is kind of a long time.....

  19. Update: I tried the new sound recommendations by Cavie without success. After double checking the 48K output settings in DVDx, I found that my resulting VIDEO_TS directory still remains in the 5GB range.

However, I also tried Rad1701's suggestions about using MPEG audio in DVD Workshop and that did the trick. It took a bit longer, but the VIDEO_TS dir ended up being 4.1GB. I am curious though...what's the downside to using MPEG audio?

Also, I just wanted to say thanks to Cavie for writing these guides. I've successfully copied about 8 DVDs thus far, using his techniques. Of course, they've all fit on a DVDr without a re-encode, until this one.

    Thanks again,

If I load the created files into DVDMaestro and use chapter extractor on the original DVD will it import the chapers correctly? If not I'll just stick to my way.

Also with DVDx is DVDx the encoder? Or does it use CCE or something?

  21. Hi!

When I try to use Dvdx 2.0 with the new audio settings I get an errorcode??
"Cannot encode MPEG1/2 or Premiere file with 48Khz sound.(Use 44.1Khz conversion)"

    Why?

  22. First off....

    great guide.

    Ok, when I try to tell it NOT to chage the AUDIO from 48kzh, (by selectiing 48khz no conversion) it gives me an error when I try to start the process saying;

"Cannot Encode MPEG1/2 or Premiere file with 48khz sound. Use 44.1 khz conversion"

Ok, I dont want to do this, that way I dont have to wait to re-encode the sound BACK to 48khz later.

How do I get around this?

    thanks

You can split mpegs in TMPgenc, goto -file -mpeg tools -merge and cut... Its not so difficult, and there are lots of guides on this forum to guide you.
