  1. My apologies if this has been discussed before, the amount of posts
is just a bit overwhelming to sift through.

A cousin grabbed some video from a camcorder and fed it into the computer via "video in" on an ATI All in Wonder card. Now the movie
has a .mp2 extension, but has no sound. I want to see if I can add
my own sounds using Adobe Premiere, but I don't know that premiere
acknowledges the file format. What should I do ?

I can rip with the best of them, but this is greek to me.

    Thanx,
    Weasyl

if its premiere 6.5 , load the mp2 file in premiere and make a audio track to go with it ... render the audio as wav and w/ tmpgec , encode the wav file only to mpeg1 layer 2 , use mpeg tools in tmpgenc and mux the new audio mpeg file with your mp2 video file (select program stream as type) ..

if not premiere 6.5 , you will need to make a proxy file to be able to to sync your audio track ... i would do this by quickly re-encoding a mpeg1 file ,, same fps or using dvd2avi and make a d2v file and wrap it with vfapi and load one of those in premiere 5 or 6 ..

then from there , render your wav file and same as before ..

if you have it -- soundforge 6 would be a better choice to make a sync audio track as you can load the mpeg file in it (may have to mux it with a null (none) audio to get a program stream) and work on your audio in soundforge ..

  3. I am not working with premiere 6.5, only premiere 6.0.
This is where I expose how little I know.

Could you give me a bit more detail on how to re-encode my
.mp2 into an mpeg1 file ? I do have dvd2avi but have only
used it on .vob files. Will it work on .mp2 files too ?

Wrap with vfapi ? Again I need the idiots version.

Sorry for the ignorance. I am learning, but with me it takes
    time. *grin* Lots of time

    thanks for the patience,

make sure first you have the mpeg2 plug in for reading mpeg2 files installed in tmpgenc (see tools at left) ..

load your mp2 file as source and pick mpeg1 as output .. if your source is 25fps (pal) , use same for output (same for any other fps ) ..

    the size can be anything -> 320 x 240 is good ...

render the mpeg1 file and load this mpeg1 into premiere ..

why do we do this ? because premiere 6 accepts mpeg1 files and you need (well you should) some idea of what is what to make a audio track to match the video -- this mpeg1 file you will delete when your all done and is known as a proxy file ...

if you do this correctly - the proxy file wil be the same lenth as the mpeg2 (mp2 file) ..

remember to render only a wav file when your done in premiere ..

you havnt said what you what to do with your finished product -- which dictates the next steps a little .... render your wav as stereo 48khz sample rate though which works with dvd and also most svcd ..

  5. Thanks for the details BJ_M, this is exactly the clarification I need,
not being up on the lingo.

From my point of view, here is what I think I know now. I use
tmpgenc to convert my .mp2 to a MPEG1 file which premiere can load
and use. I then use the visuals from that to cue and arrange my
audio. Once I have my audio all set up I save it as a .wav file and
use it and my original .mp2 as inputs in tmpgenc and sync them
together to create a new video file with my sound.

Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker sound here I come *grin*

almost -- take the wav file you have made and load it in tmpgenc and select audio only - > mpeg 1 layer two , 48khz (try 48 - if 48 doesnt work you will need to set at 44.1 and this is better done in premiere (or see guides) )

when the wav file is finished encoding (pretty fast) , go to mpeg tools in tmpgenc -> multiplex -> add your mp2 file and new audio file -> multiplex (select program stream or svcd if your doing a svcd - i dont know) ...

problems -> if mp2 file doesnt load into multiplexer - > load mp2 file into DE-multiplexer and select only video stream and strip it -> then add that file into multiplexer with mpeg audio file ..
