I have a Mini-DV Camcorder with an DV-out and a Belkin Firewire card with DV-in. With the card the software VideoWave III came.
I have one wuestion to start with, As I am not really familiar with the DV-system, i want to know if there is any way to capture faster than the time it takes to whatch the movie. Am i doing something wrong or..?
Cause on the box of the card it says 400Mbits per sec. Isnt there anyway to transfer the stream without actually look at the video, just transfer it ?
Also i read this in the fast guide to VideoWave in the FireWire card manual:
---
"9. Most camcorders shut down to save battery power when they are not used. If you are in VideoWave and thsi happens (you have chosen standbymode) then you will need to exit VideoWave, turn on the camcorder to record instead of standby mode if you intend to capture a long video stream (usually more than 10 minutes)."
---
If you look at the last lines you understand that there must be another way to capture than to have the cam in Playmode, otherwise this problem should never accure.
Second, how can i make a divX file out of the 12gb large AVI file I have captured already, in "playback-mode"...appearantly VirtualDub doesnt support Type-1 DV-files so....any suggestions?

I don't think there is a way to capture faster than the playing time.
As for the VirtualDub problem, just convert the file to a Type2 DV file which VirtualDub can handle. (there's no quality loss) Check the tools section on this site. Some programs can save as either Type1 or Type2 so you may want to check you capture settings on future projects.
