  1. Well, i had a panasonic rv-31 that didnt fully support svcd. I had heard
apex were good, so i got a 1100w at walmart for $58. Well, out of the box
it didnt play (s)vcd, so i had to flash it. Thats lame. But whats with the
damn thing overheating? The piece of crap will play most of the movie, then
just freeze. Or itll break up, and then stop. Or itll just continue to play
fine. So id like suggestions for a new one. The panasonic RV31 was
wonderful, cept for lack of svcd. VCDs and DVDs played perfectly fine and
    rarely ever broke up.

So heres what id like. Svcd, (possibly xsvcd), subtitles, sectable audio
    tracks, vcd, xvcd, dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+r, dvd+rw, mp3 isnt a big deal. Jpg
veiwer would be a nice bonus. Oh, and of course cdr & cdrw. I really want
pal support too. Or rather, a player thatll output pal video to an ntsc tv
(like the apex). I'd kinda like nonstandard svcd too, like audio at 48,000,
vs svcd spec 44,000. The apex does all this, but the damn thing overheats.
And since their upgrade, they dont play svcd subs anymore. Ive heard daewoo
mentioned a few times. Any overheating problems? Ive looked at the
    5000/6000 models.

Any suggestions anyone? Oh, my other complaint with the apex is the thing
is just damn ugly No interface whatsoever.

And i dont care about price. Id go up to $200 or so. I want a quality
    player.

  2. Philips 724AT
139 $ at (ack) Best Buy (I hate BB). Anyway, plays everything I have thrown at it media wise: DVD-R (princo 2x), SVCD, VCD (silver/silver media). Very nice player and has progressive scan.

Has a nice 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x FF and RW option that my older Pioneer 343 does not have. Also, my 343 plays about 60% of the Princo 2x DVD-R discs I make which was the main factor for me buying this 724. This thing plays 100% of them. (I have burnt about 10 DVDs now, some splitting, some not.)

    For info, I have a Pioneer A05 (dvd+-rw) and a Plextor 12/10/40 (cdrw)

I agree with Graysky, a Philips 724AT works with just about everything including XVCD and XSVCD. I have tried all of Kwags templates and they worked fine on this player and it's cousin, with one exception. The K3 templates need to be changed to 544 x 480 resolution to get them to work. It's cousin, the Magnavox MDV450SL, is the same player without progressive scan. It is hard to find, but I recommend it also. The only place I see it available now is Blockbuster online. Target also has the 724AT at about $140. That's where I got mine.
