  1. I am trying to backup my DVD of "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story."

The title set for the movie consists of 7 VOB files. The first VOB file has 2 VOB-IDs. ID 1 is an introduction to the film. ID 2 contains the acual film. When the original DVD is played, the introduction will play, the layer will change, and the movie will start. The introduction is Chapter 1, and the movie start is Chapter 2.

When running the VOBs through DVD2AVI, the introduction reads interlaced. When the actual movie begins, the frame type rapidly switches from Interlaced to Progressive, back and forth, and the Film percentage slowly climbs but never reaches maximum.

Also, there are two sets of frame readouts, coded and playback. When I use Force Film settings, the numbers for coded and playback don't match during the introduction, but match during the movie. When I don't use Force Film, the numbers match for the introduction, but don't match during the movie.

Does that mean that the movie is progressive, and the introduction is interlaced?

I watched the original movie (4:3 letterbox) on my HDTV Widescreen in Progressive Scan mode, and sometimes during the movie, particularly during camera pans, I could see some black interlace lines on the movie. At other times during the movie I noticed nothing.

I seem to be having this problem with another DVD as well (Rainmaker).

What DVD2AVI settings do I use? When I use TMPGEnc to encode, do I output the M2V as interlaced or progressive? 29.97 fps or 23.97 (29.97 interally with 3:2)? Is the source interlaced or progressive?

I feel like a newbie! I know this is a lot of help I need, but I want to do it right the first time, no coasters.

    Thanks!

  2. I created a new title set, using IFOEdit to strip all extras, and keeping only the English 5.1 sound. I also stripped out VOB ID 1, the intro. I ran the new set through DVD2AVI, and got this:

    FILM 99%
Progressive/Interlaced (switches back and forth rapidly)

I am thinking this, after reading an archived post:

It is OK to use Force Film. I think that DVD2AVI is reading the 24 frames, and then a few interlaced frames to make 29.97 fps.

    Am I right?

  3. Sorry to post again, but one last question.

If I run the VOBs through Force Film, do I use my usual, output as 23.97 (29.97 fps internally), 3:2 pulldown when play back method that I use for DVDs with progressive frames?
