It does seem rather long. I tried one here last week. A 40 min size asf file converted to VCD. (that's because the default res of the ASF was the same as VCD) It too around 4.5 hours. I used TMPGE12a

i let it go for 4 hours now and it only got to 2%
its says the estimated time left is 140 hours.... for some reason that just doesn't sound right

Seems like I've heard something about .asf's and TMPGEnc in the forum before...have you tried searching the forums for asf? You might find a previous discussion of this problem that way.

Try this: Get a modified, asf-capable version of VirtualDub and then frameserve to TMPGEnc. Or recompress the .asf as Huffuf or similar and then convert. TMPG encoding of a 30 min. file into VCD format shouldn't take more than 1 hour with your equipment.
