  1. The price of this writer is so darn attractive these days. But the reports of media compatability problems are troublesome.

So here goes... do the Ritel 4x discs work on this Pioneer and what 2x disc priced around $1-$1.50 absolutely works 100% reliable?

allmediaoutlet.com claims that all of the DVD-R and DVD-RW available on their site works with 105/A05. Should I trust them? They have 2x media from god knows who for $1.15
    http://www.allmediaoutlet.com/P-DVDR-4.7-GEN2Xfree.html

meritline has Ritek 4x for around $3.

Any other reliable brands for 2x dvd-r well under $2?

  6. Hi hardwired,
The media you have link to: http://www.esbuy.com/4xdvdrmedia.html
, is the media I use for everything, and it does work at 2x as advertised on their site. I have burned over 25 dvd's, and not one coaster. It plays fine on my settop Pioneer DVD and my computer 16x DVD. I just bought another 25 of them. The 4x media I buy from esbuy.com, their generic brand, I just got some in yesterday, so I have not burned anything with it yet. I will update once I do some testing. I hope this helped.

the 2x media they have i use also and is made by TDK (but made in tawain while apple TDK disks are made in Japan) - they work fine ... i ve tried just a few of thier 4x disks and all worked fine in various players .. in fact the only disks ive had problems with are pioneer 4x !
i see reports of problems with this burner and some disks - but i burn 100's already and havnt really any problems at all . on either the 104 or 105 ..

    Hey LuisMA,
That link is for 4X media NOT 2X. I hope you are not telling me that this 4x only works at 2x on the 4x DVR-105 Pioneer drive

Anyway, gonna order the Pioneer 105. It seems to be working for some of you guys and a few others I have talked to and the price is now $260 8)

  13. I had some problems with princo's 2x dvd discs....their quality is no good for sure. I heard the cheapest disc for Princo's 2x DVD-r wholesale price is about 50cents per disc.

I have been working with alot of technicians trying to figure out which disc is the best for 2x with almost 0% failure rate. Looks like Verbatim's is the only good ones. Also heard that Verbatim going to release Verbatim 4x +r and -r in a few weeks. Haven't test the samples yet. Hope their 4x will work better than Ritek's.[/url]

  14. DavidZ,

What's the results with your 4x dvd-r discs:
    http://www.supermediastore.com/dvdmedia.html

Who is the manufacturer and which facility do these come out of?

It's kinda funny a friend just recommended this store just before you posted. Also, did I hear right that supermediastore provides free shipping and a discount to vcdhelp members?

Keep us informed on your 2x analysis. I have already planned to stay away from the Princos.
    Thanks.

  15. So far, mines from Ritek works fine in Pioneer 105 and Sony DRU500A no return at all. I have also heard that Optodisc's 4x will have better results.

About Ritek 's 4x result, we are working with Ritek try to see if we can actually have a datasheet for customers or some kind of report.

    Davidz,
I'm a little confused which 4x dvd-r's your talking about on supermediastore.com I only see 4x named DVD-ON on the link, but notice on the link heading it says Ritek. I trust these are the Riteks you mentioned.
    http://store.yahoo.com/supermediastore/ritek-4x-dvd-media.html

Anyway I placed an order using the coupon code DVD4Xoff15 which takes the price to $52.50 or $2.10/disc 8)

  21. Have you received them now and do they work well? Oh and did you get the free shipping you mntioned in the thread?

$2.10 is still pretty expensive and I'm not sure I need that speed, guaranteed 2x at $1 would work for me!

  22. I can't believe we have cheap 4x media for the A05 and no cheap 2x media for the A05...am I missing something

Has someone tried the Ritek 2x (A04 1.31) and found them not to work at 2x with the A05?

    TIA

i have tried the ritek g03, which is rated at 2x, on my a05. it can only do 1x, unfortunately.

  24. thanks for the info, bad news
Maybe I should lower my expectations and just look for cheap media that's reliable at x1 in the A05 then !

  25. their will be firmware in janurary for the 105 for it can work on cheaper media. Im not worried.
    Quote Quote
  26. i'm not sure if the new firmware for the a05, if there is one, will work with ritek g03 at 2x. it might not, if you look at the media table for the a04 v1.40. the a04 could do it, but i don't think pioneer enabled the capability for the a04 in their official firmware release.

  27. well FW 1.21 is out, so let's see if that helps getting 2x speed with cheap media...and maintain 4x with that other cheap media!
    Quote Quote
  28. well, i just flashed 1.21 to my a05, and it still DOES NOT burn 2x with the ritekg03. the funny thing is that the g03 is listed in the media table (from the firmware-flash forum), but the drive refused to burn at 2x.

i guess i'll wait for the ritekg04 will drop in price first and then forget about burning at 2x altogether!

This is what i think of AO5 and its media problem at this day.
Well i have wait the 1.21 firmware upgrade to say what i think.
After burnt lost DVD-R medias what did i see?
AO5 is sold as DVD writer 4X for all and at good price.
    What is the reality.
    - works ok on very expensive DVD-R listed by Pioneer (around 20$ in France).
    - Not work in 4X on other DVD-R 4X.
    - Not work in 2X on common DVD-R (i dont speak of the lowest price at 8$ in France).
    - Works random in 1X on common DVR-R.
Works bad with several DVD burnt softwares especially the famous Nero even in 5.9.17 and new 5.10 release.
In fact the AO4 seems much more compatible (and in 2X more comaptible) especially if you have the good idea to not do the firmware upgrade to 1.33

AO5 seems NOT be a STANDARD DVD-R writer as it s firmware accept a limited certified DVD-R.
So its not a product for ALL people but more for companies or administrations which can drop money in medias as they want. Too bad to discover that AFTER i bought it.
Hear sirens of Pioneer marketing was an error.
Because burning in 1X (i have no other choice) takes 1 hour and CDR is finally faster to burn same data volume.
