  1. Is there a program or tool that can check the compressability of a DVD? I ask because if I knew that a DVD would not compress that well I would use an extra CD to gain the quality. I noticed in GordianKnot that you can do this check, but is this just for converting to DivX? Would the compressability factor in Gordian also apply when I'm converting to SVCD? A nice simple tool that checks out the DVD would be handy.

Of course I could just encode a minute or two and check out the quality that way but it would be nice to be able to determine beforehand whether or not to use 2, 3 or 4 CD's etc. I always encode to SVCD as well.

I have read that DVD's will encode differently depending on the movie so that two different movies can look quite different in terms of picture quality, even when encoded exactly the same way and at the same bitrate.

    Thanks in advance.

If your making SVCD's fit cd is a great tool to use. I generally put 50-55 minutes on each cd in SVCD mode and find the quality good no matter the movie.

  5. Right. I have had a good play with FitCD and it is very useful. However, the compressability check it does is just mathamatical and goes off the figures entered. What I would really like is something that checks the DVD itself to see how well the video stream would compress. I know this can be done with GordianKnot for DivX and was wondering if I can do the same with SVCD? Knowing something will compress very well would enable me to make better encoding choices.

    Cheers,
