  1. I finally bought a DVD burner (Cyclone DVD-R), because I've downloaded many movies, and want to watch them in my living room instead of my study on a 21 inch monitor.
Is there a good guide on how to convert DIVX ultimately back to DVD? Some have AC3 audio, some do not. I'd like directions for both if they're out there. Thanks for any help!

Don't be suprised if the out come on dvd is crap

Divx is a very lossy compresion and low bit rate encoding

Plus the resize to a larger resolution streching the picure

I now only bother with dvd encoding for backup from other dvds
and only make SVCD's from Divx's

its ok having an avalible Bitrate of 9800kps but not much cop if your original file is 900kps

Give it a go and see how you get on you don't learn if you don't try things for yourself

Make your Divx file into a 352x480 MPG2 and it'd look fine. Fit like 2-3 movies on one DVD with same quality as you would get from SVCDing it. That is if you care about switching half-way through and have plenty of DVD-Rs to toss around.

Thats all very well and good i'm sure, But the original post was about convertind Divx back to DVD

And also Its no good just slamming loads of Mpeg2's onto a dvd if u want to watch them on a Stand alone player, They have to be in the correct format ( SVCD ) to play them.

When you say 'DivX', your forgetting something. There is no 'DivX' per say. There is a lot of older 3.11 stuff. This is mostly crappy fixed rate low-motion stuff at something around VCD resolution. It's all single pass.

I've seen some 4.x stuff, but not a lot. In this era is the 2-pass nandub stuff. This is typically 1 or 2 CD and much better quality than the 3.11 1 cd stuff. These should convert to SVCD okay, especially the 2 CD rips.

Finally is the DivX 5 stuff. This comes with 'better' 2-pass support. 2 CD rips will look very good in SVCD. 1 cd rips will still be watchable, especially if your TV isn't too big.

There si a lot of XviD out there now, and it is, IMHO, Superior to DivX. Native 2-pass support. You can do a 2 CD rip in better than SVCD resolution, with ac3 sound.

And of course, it goes without say, you can't really up-size resolution. It can't ever look any better than what it does as full screen on your PC's monitor. There is no program tha takes a 320x240 VCD and makes it into a 720x480 DVD. There just isn't enough information there. It will be a very blocky DVD.

To summarize; The quality of your conversion depends on the quality of the DivX you start with. This goes for ANY conversion. Older 1 CD DivX would be excellant VCD conversion candidates. Only 2-pass DivX and XviD would really look okay as SVCD. To actually author in DVD format, then it's on a rip by rip basis. It all depends on what resolution it was encoded to. You can forget about 720x480, but look into 'other DVD Formats'

Yes, that is what I am saying.

Your 2nd paragraph shows you didn't understand.

352x480 = CVD (Chinese SVCD) and also is a valid res for DVD. So the files will be DVD. So they are in the correct DVD format.
