supertek 2003

Newbie needing help and guidence. I am writing this from the UK. I recently bought a supertek 2003 from Canada or the US which stated that it would play many different disc formats including vcd's. the leads I have are red white and yellow which I attach to a scart converter which then in turn I attach to my tv. The disc is spinning it says vcd and it is counting on the lcd but I get no picture or sound. Am I missing something simple or is it more complicated than that. Can anyone give me an answer soon as it is for a christmas present and I'd like it to be able to do what I bought it for in the first place.

Is there a switch on the scart converter for input and output ?
Have you got the cables round the right way ?
Can you do scart to scart ?
