  1. I downloaded an AVI file, that is approx 144MB. I used Roxio Video Wave 5 to convert to MPEG2, and already 25% of the file is larger than 1GB. I stopped encoding, since I was running out of space!

I thought MPEG compress AVI??? I must be doing something wrong?

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks

avi is a wrapper that can be one of many many types of compressed or uncompressed file structures .. what you downloaded most likly is a divx avi , which is a hacked subset of the mpeg4 compression ...

    mpeg4 compresses a lot more than mpeg2

if someone puts a file on the internet for downloading , they want it in the most compressed format possable (ussually) ..

  3. my guess is that the file is divx/avi and when you convert the divx/avi which is my guessing highly compressed to be a 144mb file to mpeg2 which is using in this case tons more bits per frame than the divx/avi the file will be larger. example:600kbps ecoded to a 2500kbps =4x larger size

if i am wrong i appologize.
