  1. Why is this program always part of the 'how-tos'? I want TOTALLY free programs to help me make .AVIs from a ripped DVD. I can take it from there. Does anyone know of such an animal?

    Thanks

  2. Because TMPGEnc is a totally free program that has the best price vs quality image.

Check the comparisons tab to the left of the screen and it will show you more information.

tmpgenc mpeg2 encoding is not free. IF you want a free mpeg2 encoder use bbmpeg but the quality is not the best.

If its AVI's you are trying to make then there are plenty of freeware tools around if you can be bothered to find them. This site is mainly about producing S(VCD) and DVD for playback on a standalone player. Though some info for ripping DVD's to avi (divx) is available here you will get more over at www.doom9.org
