I have used TMPGEnc for conversion from avi to mpeg 1. It works great.
I was just wondering if theres anything faster than that. TMPGEnc displays the video as its converting. Is there any way to make it not display that while its converting ? Maybe if it doesnt have to display it will work faster.
Or if theres someting else that converts without the display that I could use that.
But whatever is there it should be freeware. Buying software is against my principles.
They should comeout with dvd players that play AVI and other movie files. That would be so cool.

All help and comments are appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Regards
    Ravi.

You can turn off the preview in TMPG via Options>Preview Options>Do not display. I don't think this will make a big difference. This program does do a good job but takes a long time. There is the option to change the priority, and this will affect encoding speed. Personally, I set it to the lowest priority and just leave it running in the background while I use my PC for other things. Has not caused a crash in XP yet.

There is a faster encoder. I'm told the CinemaCraft Encoder (CCE) is much faster but yields poorer quality in either MPG-1 or 2 - I don't remember which. Also, if paying for good software is against your principles (how can you say that...and still have principles?), then the CCE will be very much against your principles.

Yeah, there's about 2000 reasons you shouldn't use it.....
I hear it is much faster, but as far as poorer quality goes for mpeg1 or mpeg2, I'm not sure. Heck, it better not be!

I think your biggest problem is located within your computer details

a 200mhz PII , 4gb HD -- that in itself will make a converstion take forever
