I have started encoding video clips from a DVD (containing
music) to SVCD according to many manuals I have read by now.
But the process takes one hell of a time. For instance one
song I encoded yesterday took little over 5 hours (the song
is approx 5 minutes). The file size was 110MB. I don't know
if I am doing something wrong or if it should be like this.
Can someone enlighten me about the hard facts. Thank you.

Dilshan
I have a Compaq Presario 5600,450MHz processor,128MB ram,
60GB harddisk.
Following steps were followed:
* copied the vob-files to harddisk using smartripper.
* created d2v and wav files using DVD2AVI.
* loaded d2v and wav files above to TMPEGEnc Plus.
TMPEGEnc settings:
template:SVCD(NTSC).mcf
external audio encoder==>layer-2:toolame.exe
sampling frequency convertersrc.exe
rate control mode:2-pass VBR
average bitrate:2520
encode mode:Non-interlace
motion search precision:High quality(slow)

i think it's quite normal it takes a long time... with a 450mHz. It's true, it is a hell of a long time... u can accelerate the process by selecting NORMAL QUALITY in stead of high quality, that'll accelerate the process

Its going to be slow with a 450mhz.
you could also change to CBR instead of VBR that should save you some considerable time. -
Thank you very much for the answers provided. I have another question
that keep bothering me. When I started encoding video clips few weeks
ago (at that time I haven't read any of the guides available on this
site), I dragged and dropped vob files direct from DVD drive to TMPEGEnc
(that means I neither used smartripper or DVD2AVI) and encoded them to
both VCD and SVCD. Everything worked perfectly and I even burned VCDs
and watched them with my standalone DVD player. But sometimes I encountered
problems with one or two vob files (out of 8) after loading them to
TMPEGEnc. The problem was that I couldn't edit (the bar in source range was
unmovable). This week I started encoding video clips the proper way (according
to guides). But I found that Audio quality was better when I encoded video
clips the wrong way (i.e drag and drop to TMPEGEnc direct from DVD drive)!
My questions:
1) why it works perfectly with some vob files but not with others
when I drag and drop them to TMPEGEnc from DVD drive?
2) why the audio quality is somewhat subdued (I have to say it is still good)
when I encode video clips proper way?
I welcome any comments. Thank You.

Dilshan
